The BAFTAs once had an identity of their own, but at this point they're just the UK branch of the Broadcast critics -- lining up to try and "predict" the Oscars. Given that they've half-spoiled many of teh meager surprises of recent years (Arkin, Swinton, Cotillard), I almost hate them worse than the rest.
But if they are going to serve that function, this isn't all that bad a slate. They've in fact gone for the edgier work of The Master and Amour, and resisted the Brit sentimentality many of us fear the Oscars will cave into (Maggie Smith, Tom Hooper). I wish I were confident AMPAS would do the same. But one does have to say that this is yet another sign Tom Hooper is, at best, on thin ice for an Oscar nomination (and once again follows the trajectory of Condon/Dreamgirls in '06).

Re: BAFTA nominations
This really just affirms my feeling that may be the year's Best Picture spoiler. Apart from the rather confusing Best Actor nomination, the film hit all the right categories and, with the Best Actor mention, we now have some assurances that voters DO love the movie, perhaps unreasonably so. This list isn't as typical BAFTA as we've seen in the past. Few out-of-left-field nominees have appeared, we've mostly got people who were always Oscar contenders. It makes it a bit confusing.

Re: BAFTA nominations
Quick observations:
Lincoln leads with ten nominations, but no Spielberg. It's deja vu all over again a la The Color Purple at the 1985 Oscars. Hooper is left out of Best Director, Tarantino is left out of Best Picture but is in for Best Director. Haneke and Riva are nominated for Amour, but Trintignant is once again ignored as is Denzel Washington. Affleck is nominated for Best Actor in additon to Best Director.
All three stars of The Master make it. They like Christoph Waltz more than Leo. They Still love Helen Mirren. No Maggie Smith, but they did nominate her pal Judi Dench.
