I don't really love the movie. It feels like a miasma of other, better movies and I would've REALLY loved to have seen Bogart in the lead, but Ida Lupino does batshit great.

Ida Lupino never received an Oscar nomination for any of her work despite years of superb performances.

Also worth checking out are The Light That Failed, The Hard Way and The Man I Love, none of which are on commercial DVD, and High Sierra which is.

I just saw this truly wonderful film tonight and I immediately looked it up and I was kind of flabbergasted to find out Ida Lupino did not even get Oscar-nominated for her work in this film. I was blown away by her performance.

The film itself is a great, great good old-fashioned piece of storytelling. A truly delicious blend humor, suspense, romance, drama.
