2017 Oscar Nominations
Re: 2017 Oscar Nominations
'Lady Bird' is going to become the first Best Picture winner to take home Best Picture and nothing else since 'Grand Hotel.' Because you can only do that if your movie has a Greta.

It's still nominated for ScreenplayReza wrote:So the Academy decided to play safe and dissed James Franco. A relief because I was not looking forward to his film at all.

Re: 2017 Oscar Nominations
For me the greatest outrage is another pointless nomination wasted on Meryl Streep. There are officially only 4 available slots per year. Sorry, ladies.
Very happy for Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon. I was a fan of theirs before The Big Sick and now they're Academy Award® nominees.
I'm bummed for Stuhlbarg and Hammer but that was such a loaded category. Plummer's nomination was most likely A Statement, so swap him out. (Beginners is one of my all-time favorites so I love the guy, but he didn't need this one.)
The one thing I needed to see was Greta Gerwig in best director, so I'm content.

I was wondering ho much of the cheering in the room was for Daniel Kaluuya's name being announced versus that going from Day-Lewis to Kaluuya meant Franco was being passed over.Reza wrote:So the Academy decided to play safe and dissed James Franco. These are very difficult to read. The background overwhelms the text. Someone should post them in this thread.

It slowly progressed from charming and irreverent to grating, but the commentators on the ABC stream I was watching on loved it.Big Magilla wrote:I didn't mind the mugging as much as her inability to pronounce names, especially Daniel Kaluuya's.Okri wrote:a) I haven't seen Girls Trip, but Haddish's nomination announcement made me root against her.
Re: 2017 Oscar Nominations
Not really. His score is pretty solid, but I am surprised they went for that over his score for The Post.Aceisgreat wrote:John Williams' nomination for The Last Jedi is even more ridiculous than his nomination for The Force Awakens. Just a collection of recycled themes.

Re: 2017 Oscar Nominations
Three Billboards seemed to be doing great ... until Best Director was announced.
Agnès Varda lands her first nomination (for Documentary) the same year she gets an Honorary Award.

a) I haven't seen Girls Trip, but Haddish's nomination announcement made me root against her.
b) Best Director is pretty phenomenal.
c) Underwhelmed by a lot of these otherwise.
