Well as usual it feels like more of the year’s supposedly quality releases haven’t reached me yet – so no Squid & the Whale, Goodnight and Good Luck, Capote, Walk the Line, Junebug, Syriana, Grizzly Man… we haven’t even seen some early US movies like The Upside of Anger yet. The New World and Munich opened this weekend and I haven’t caught either yet. But this is my top ten list as it stands.

1. Mysterious Skin (Gregg Araki)
2. Brokeback Mountain (Ang Lee)
3. Hidden (Michael Haneke)
4. A History of Violence (David Cronenberg)
5. Tropical Malady (Apichatpong Weerasethakul)
6. Downfall (Oliver Hirschbiegel)
7. The Constant Gardener (Fernando Mereilles)
8. Batman Begins (Christopher Nolan)
9. How’s Moving Castle (Hayao Miyazaki)
10. King Kong (Peter Jackson)

Favourite movies of 2005.
Note: this list contains 2004 movies that didn't surface here until 2005, so I will extend it to include 10 from 2005. And they are my faves not what I consider to be the best - although they are close.

1. A History Of Violence
2. Good Night And Good Luck
3. Capote
4. Closer
5. Million Dollar Baby
6. Hotel Rwanda
7. Murderball
8. Crash
9. Memoirs Of A Geisha
10. Munich
11. Corpse Bride
12. March Of The Penguins
13. Walk The Line

(I ask myself...A top 10 list with a Spielberg movie on it?!)

Didn't live up the hype:
Syriana - huh?
Brokeback Mountain - found it very distant and I never bought into their deep affection for each other until half way into the film. I blame that on the screenplay. It was trying to be too subtle. I went in expecting to see something timeless and deeply affecting - Larry McMurtry and Ang Lee should have been able to do that...

Have not seen - The Constant Gardener, Hustle And Flow, Grizzly Man, Squid and the Whale, the monkey movie.

Best of the Film Fest (viff.org) out of 24
1. Le Grande Voyage
2. Citizen Dog
3. Paradise Now
4. Dhakiyarr VS The King
5. The Mosquito Coast
6. M.A.I.D.
7. Stolen Children
8. Kissed By Winter
9. The Devils Miner
10. Sorry For Kung Foo
