Best Foreign Language Film
Re: Best Foreign Language Film
Yes, but not only narratively linear... It's a safer movie. Comparing the two movies is really impossible. The Great Beauty is on a different level, completely.
And Italy needed this. Not only its cinema. Italy itself.

Re: Best Foreign Language Film
Well, The Hunt is a very linear film, that’s for sure.

ESPECIALLY compared to The Hunt, which isn't a bad movie of course, but which is more linear, more predictable, and at least in theory more American-friendly. The Great Beauty is more complex, and I'd say even darker in many ways. The Great Beauty isn't perfect but it's cinema with a capital C.
And recently we have sent to the Oscars the wrong movies, this must be said. This year we haven't made that mistake.
Re: Best Foreign Language Film
I really wish I articulated why I thought this was a bigger possibility then many were giving it credit for being, but I would've been genuinely surprised if it had lost.
Re: Best Foreign Language Film
Well, I can’t really argue against that, considering I haven’t seen The Great Beauty. I’ll try to see it soon.

I think The Hunt is much closer to the Academy's sensibilities than The Great Beauty.

And yes, congratulations, Italian films haven't been doing too well in this category recently.

Re: Best Foreign Language Film
I guess I should clarify I have only seen THE GREAT BEAUTY. I cannot say it deserved the award over the four other nominees, but I can say it was an amazing film that deserves recognition.

Thanks. We are really very happy here in Italy. This has been a very tense day - basically everyone was talking about this possibility, it had almost a metaphorical meaning - and I'm glad that the outcome has been positive.
Plus - the movie is very, very good. See it if you haven't still - but not on a small screen.
Re: Best Foreign Language Film
The Hunt was the favorite, but this isn’t a major surprise. The themes in that film are too dark and depressing for the Academy members. I haven’t seen The Great Beauty yet, but I figure that it’s thematically much closer to what the Academy likes to see.

Italy had not won since LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL! I guess they felt it was time to let them out of the penalty box after exporting that schlock. THE GREAT BEAUTY definitely deserved it.
