I find it is a lot easier to go by the premiere date - which is usually the IMDb date. However this is not always foolproof, especially with very old, foreign or obscure films (in fact there is a LOT of error esp. in foreign films of the 40s, 50s and 60s). If I'm in doubt I usually just look up the film in the Wikipedia from its country of origin - if it isn't there (and if I want to be esp. sure) a quick Google search usually gives a consensus premiere date across a number of different sites.

They're your awards so stick to your original list.
I started out trying to go by Oscar eligibility but found too many films whose L.A. release dates were in question. You can find almos all New York release dates on line through the N.Y. Times but there are so many films whose release dates vary with L.A. taht it constitutes almost a completely different list. I find that what works best for me is using the earlier of either the N.Y. or L.A. release date.

I usually organize my lists in the years the films were first released in theaters anywhere internationally with festival debuts not counting.
This is the absolute weakest year for Best Actress ever though so I wouldn't have a single clue who to pick because I have never liked Winona Ryder. Kate Winslet would get Rock's place then for her work in
Heavenly Creatures.

Crissy Rock is an interesting pick, although the film was ineligible for 1994 Oscar consideration. It didn't open theatrically in the U.S. until 1995.

OKay, okay. New Developments, which is where we should have done this all along. Still, calling me a liar with no provocation, as is often done here, is beyond the more reasonable debating we should have. I want also to apologize for bringing Okri into my response before. I was recalling a conversation a while ago where I had stopped arguing but not okri. Still, I should have restrained myself. At least I'm not like Svengali. You remember him?
On topic, 1994 is one of my favorite years to recall when thinking about the movies I've been to. 1994 through 1996 were years when I was working on my high school newspaper and writing reviews. Then I moved into writing for college papers. So many nice movie memories.

I had never heard anything about Hawthorne prior to the nominations were announced but his performance was terrific and his nod was nothing but a very deserved one. Was it the result of a campaign? I don't care, it seems sometimes campaigns push the envelopes for the right people that otherwise could have been ignored...
