Although it looks like a routine historical/wartime romance--soldier falls in love with nurse--Passchendaele, which is set to premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, could be a modest player at the Oscars: it's the most expensive film in Canadian history, written/directed/and starring one of Canada's most popular stars, Paul Gross (best known to US audiences for his series Due South), and based on the story of his own grandfather, who fought in the World War I battle of Passchendaele--which is to Canada what Gallipoli is to Australia and New Zealand. The website is pretty impressive, and based on the trailer, Cinematography and Art Direction nods could very well be possible.
