My fantasy list of winners from any group, just to put the idea out there:

Picture: Assassination of Jesse James...

Director: Paul Verhoeven (Black Book)

Actor: Steve Carrell (Dan in Real Life)

Actress: Keri Russell (Waitress)

Supporting Actor: Ed Harris (Gone Baby Gone)

Supporting Actress: Kelly MacDonald (No Country For Old Men)

I want one to go for Ashley Judd in Bug.

And Tommy Lee Jones for No Country rather than Bardem.

Yes! Will some organization please propel her to a surprise nomination for I'm Not There?

Is there ONE of these organizations that could have some imagination? I like No Country for Old Men, the Coens, Bardem, and Ryan just fine...but I don't think any of them tower over their competition the way these critics groups have sort of made it seem. (As for Christie, well, I'm okay with lack of imagination in that category.)

I want to start seeing some ballsy choices. Zodaic for Best Picture! Todd Haynes for Director! Acting prizes to Gordon Pinsent, Tang Wei, Tommy Lee Jones, Charlotte Gainsbourg! (Sad acknowledgment: those aren't really that ballsy at all.)

And I would like ONE critics group that still values its self-worth to recognize that Casey Affleck is a freakin' sound editor!

it's clear that these small critics groups especially are more interested in predicting the Oscars than anything else.

Who knows... maybe Juno is only that high up because she decided not to get an abortion. It is the south after all.
