The Winds of War made a good soapy WWII tv miniseries leading up to Pearl Harbour. Even better was War and Remembrance with its devastating scenes set inside Auschwitz and with superb performances by Sir John Gielgud and Jane Seymour. Both tv adaptations were also by Wouk.

He was more a pulp/popular writer than any kind of artist, but I loved The Caine Mutiny when I read it as a high-school freshman, and I later devoured Marjorie Morningstar, Don't Stop the Carnival, and Youngblood Hawke (the latter ended the romance for me). Never read or watched The Winds of War, but lots of other people did. A very long and, seemingly, happy life.
