If you have Amazon Prime, you have until December 28 to watch this excellent, and underrated, film. This is what I wrote after I first saw it:
An important movie because it's such a rare beast: It's a serious look at issues of religious faith, it's about women, and it's for the most part made by women (director, three of the writers, cinematographer, editor). You see movies about men and their faith struggles all the time (just last year, Silence and Hacksaw Ridge), but this one deserves attention for this alone. The movie itself is very good, I think. Similarly to Ida, it deals with a Polish nun (in this case, several), with the devastation of World War II still in the background. It even features Agata Kulesza. I'm going to be sketchy on plot specifics, because I do think it will play better if you go in fairly fresh--and I do hope some people take a chance on this; it's on DVD and streaming on Amazon Prime--but essentially it plays out the question of how people of religious faith react when they face something so evil and traumatizing that it shakes their world off its axis. If the movie doesn't exactly give a quick or easy answer to that question, it's because the answer looks different for each person.

Sorry to hear of your recent illness. It can take a while to recover from surgery sometimes.
Ironically my mother (who had back surgery for sciatica on 2 Sep and is now fully recovered and better from that) was diagnosed with appendicitis on 12 September and spent another week in hospital having antibiotics pumped into her to treat it as surgery was at that time was considered way to perilous. She had a 10 day course of antibiotics once she left hospital only for her white blood cell count to climb higher one week after she finished the antibiotics. She ended up back at the hospital but they let her go home with another 10 day course. It's all taken its toll on her and she has only regained her appetite. Over the past weeks she has been sleeping a lot and has lacked the energy to even barely crawl up the stairs. She is getting regular throbbing sensations in the right side of her abdomen but thankfully she isn't running a tempature. Aside from the appendicitis (her appendix is dilated by 9mm) she also has a mass the size of the average adult fist in the abdomen hanging of the appendix. Taking her to a colorectal surgeon next week (if she doesn't end up back in hospital in the meantime). Glad I had mine out when I was about 9 or 10.
I was surprised to learn that only 7% of the population suffered from appendicitis. I always thought is was more common.

BEST ACTOR

Affleck was a supporting winner in 2007 (The Assassination of Jesse James ...), as was Garfield in 2010 (The Social Network). Gosling was nominated in lead for Drive in 2011. Reynolds is making his debut here for an unusual genre role. Washington won twice before, in support in 1989 (Glory) and in lead 1996 (Courage Under Fire). Naomie Harris, Moonlight
Janelle Monáe, Hidden Figures
Octavia Spencer, Hidden Figures
Sigourney Weaver, A Monster Calls
Harris and Monáe are on their first nods. Spencer has two prior nods here (2011, The Help; 2013, Fruitvale Station). Weaver returns after an 18 year absence; she has 3 prior nods (1995 support, Copycat; 1997 support, The Ice Storm; 1999 lead, A Map of the World). Davis, a winner in 2008 for Doubt, captures the prize again.

Thought I'd post an update given that I have seen a number of films that have impacted on my selections thus far. I am looking forward to Manchester by the Sea, La La Land (let's face it, it can only be better than Whiplash) and Jackie. Nothing much else likely to attract Academy attention has zero interest from me. And the day my local video shop finally closes shop will be the year I stop seeing everything nominated by the Academy.
Best Film

*Bill Nighy all but steals Lone Scherfig's Their Finest, easily her best film since An Education. He would be top of my list for 2016 supporting actors but it looks like it won't qualify until 2017 as that is when it appears to be being released worldwide.

Yeah, it's looking like a weak year again for Supporting Actor. Though I forgot all about Dong-seok Ma in Train to Busan who all but steals the film from everyone else, including the rampaging living dead.
Jonas Bloquet is the only real stand-out male supporting ensemble in Elle as Isabelle Huppert's truly dim-witted son. It's not an easy roll to play and he pulls it off beautifully with material that really should not work but miraculously does. That Elle is so openly disdain of him doesn't hurt the poor fellow.
I don't think Huppert will get nominated for Elle for a number of reasons. The material for one but more so because there is probably an oversupply of English language actresses in roles that will simply appeal to them more. Huppert's only hope is to swoop the critics awards for Elle and the equally deserving Things to Come. She is really going to need that sort of traction to make it.

Precious Doll wrote:Magilla usually starts this post and understandably much later in the year. But I'm balled over by just how great 2016 has been so far this year but must admit that very little due out for the remainder of the year (Manchester by the Sea being the exception) appeals to me. The Venice Film Festival line-up looks particularly dire. Even if I don't seen another good film from 2016 it has already proven to be a much better year than 2015.
So I'm posting my best of year list (very) early and will do an update sometime early next year. If anything it will be interesting to see how much or little it changes:
