Right here, Magilla...chill!! (j/k ;)) I was too exhausted to think last night, let alone write a post. I do apologize for the holdup, guys. I've been away on vacation. By the way, I like the new rules.

I am replacing Emma Thompson's albeit lovely performance with Kathy Bates in one of her finest turns as the title character in Dolores Claiborne. In a year of such strong female leading performances (Streep is transcendent, Shue comes out of nowhere and knocks it way far out, Sarandon is devastating, Stone is terrific), it's easy to see how Bates might've been left off in favor of some of the more heavily-touted performances, but her terrified, troubled, battered and weathered Maine housewife is easily one of the best female turns of that year and easily deserves a spot. And considering that Stephen King wrote the book with Bates in mind, it can honestly be called a perfectly casted role.

And, by the way, Judy Parfitt as her nemesis employer is, of course as Penelope stated earlier, just fantastic (although, let's replace Kathleen Quinlan, huh? What an undeserving performance to waste a spot on in BSA).

As Sabin mentioned earlier, Il Postino's strengths lie in Troisi's lovely performance as well as its score. I have no problem replacing its adapated screenplay with Tony Gilroy's superior adaptation of Dolores Claiborne.

I'm also going to replace A Little Princess with Sense and Sensibility for Art Direction.

nifty. Good thing you said something. I was going to propose we skip him, but if he'll be back, we're good.

Flipp texted me that he should be able to post his choices this evening and apologizes for the delay.

I know Flipp was on vacation in Miami for his birthday, I don't know if he's returned home yet or not.

You know you only have one rescue total per year, right, Hustler?

In the first category I´m going to replace Apollo 13 with Dead Man walking, far superior. In the second category, Film editing, I´m replacing Crimson Tide With Casino: Thelma Schoonmaker. And Finally, in the third category I´m going to rescue Batman in Sound. So, I´m getting rid of Waterworld.

I really like Dolores Claiborne and thought Parfitt was quite excellent. I thought Bates was great and Strathairn as well. It was one of the best King adaptations, but there were plenty of better films released in 1995, which was a surprisingly strong year (though Best Picture wouldn't tell you much about that).

Well, then, I am hopeful that Wild Reeds has as much support as has already been indicated, because I'm going elsewhere in the first category; I'm not sure how popular Dolores Claiborne is here, but I have to make sure Judy Parfitt's magnificent performance is recognized; so she replaces Mira Sorvino--who's competent but hardly anything to get excited about in Mighty Aphrodite--in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Amazlingly, Clueless is classified as an original screenplay, despite the fact that it clearly and openly is based on Jane Austen's Emma; but I'm not going to argue, as it gives me the chance to replace Braveheart in the Best Original Screenplay category.

And Clueless gets to replace Braveheart in Best Costume Design, too!

I think I'm going to drop out of this game.

I will get much more enjoyment out of this thread if I just read other people's posts and don't have to stress out about coming up with choices in a quick amount of time.

And OscarGuy, I know for a fact I have seen a lot less movies from this year (and most years) than plenty of people on this board, who will make a lot more informed choices than I would.

In the category of Best Picture, I'm going to replace 'Il Postino' with 'Before Sunrise'...on the basis that Penelope chooses 'Wild Reeds' and the two most glorious French movies of the decade. In addition, 'Il Postino' while sweet is a totally innocuous movie with little by way to recommend besides a charming performances by Massimo Troisi and Philippe Noiret and a fairly glorious score. And somebody else is going to knock off 'Braveheart' anyway.

In the category of Best Cinematography, I'm going to replace 'Sense and Sensibility' with 'Se7en'...assuming that the two blandest picks in this category ('S&S' & 'Braveheart') will be axed pretty quick, more the latter than the former, and I don't think anybody can dispute Dharius Khonji's remarkable cinematography.

In the category of Best Sound (Mixing), I'm going to replace 'Batman Forever' with 'Heat'.

I am also fine with you redoing your choices, providing that you are still going to place 'Before Sunrise' in the Best Picture category. lol. Great choice. Ditto for Penelope and 'Wild Reeds'.

OK, so it looks like Sabin, BJ and Penelope are in agreement and we can begin anew with Sabin.

Absolutely. I only imposed the PASS rule in 1934 b/c it was clear those individuals were passing their entire turn. However, if someone passes all three categories, then I do think they should be out for the remainder of the year. So, if you pass, but don't want to be eliminated entirely, then Pass with Reservations and I won't skip you in the turn order. :)
