From the sublime to the ridiculous.

After the glorious reign of The Queen in 2006, we get a Karaoke style impersonation of Edith Piaf in 2007.

Not only that, we get warmed over Elizabeth I from Cate Blanchett in the wake of Helen Mirren's brilliant turn in a two part TV mini-series about the same monarch.

Laura Linney, an actress I like, is nominated for a cold fizzle of a film and Canadian actress Ellen Page gets the "welcome to Hollywood" award for the likable if over-praised Juno.

Only Julie Christie in her best performance in decades as the Alzheimer patient in Away From Her truly merited an award this year.

For my money, Anne Hathaway as Jane Austen in Becoming Jane; Keira Knightley as the tragic heroine in Atonement; Angelina Jolie as Mariane Pearl in A Mighty Heart and even Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd all gave better performances than Blanchett and Linney.
