We knew The Artist was a given, but with the ASC, past nominees are always more likely to repeat, so I'm surprised there are two first-timers, including TTSS which I didn't see coming at all.

It also suggests the film is gaining ground at the right time (Academy ballots are due this week) and with its Top Ten finish at the box office last weekend, it seems to be building word of mouth. For a film that a lot of people have said is confusing, that's a pretty fantastic thing.

Of course, I was surprised to learn that Janusz Kaminski has never won the ASC trophy. He seems like such an obvious choice for them.

Wow! Nice selection of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy over War Horse. Now the Cinematography category is going to be pretty interesting. I sincerely hope these translate five for five. :)

Yeah, people don't like it. It's definitely getting a cinematography nomination from the Academy, but the Guilds don't like it.

Yay for Tinker Tailor!

And War Horse looks to pass Extremely Loud as biggest award season dud.

"The Artist" (Guillaume Shiffman)
"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" (Jeff Cronenweth)
"Hugo" (Robert Richardson)
"Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" (Hoyte van Hoytema)
"The Tree of Life" (Emmanuel Lubezki)
