Online Film Critics Society Nominations
I have a feeling that American Gangster is going to be an also-ran for nomination. We had The Departed last year: my bet is that they go for a "milder" film, Juno, or maybe There Will Be Blood.
But I thought Zodiac a very good story and well-done, and I am looking forward to the new Fincher film which will be a big contender next year.

I don't understand the Zodiac love either. It just seems like one of those typically graphic thrillers that does decently. No mention for American Gangster?

Even in the New Year, you never shock me Zahveed. Thank you.
But seriously... what would shock you? Am I sporting an obvious trend that I haven't realized or what?
So many questions for you Akash :p

And it would probably have been better as a miniseries.Penelope wrote:FilmFan720 wrote:I think the maturity and restraint of Zodiac is far above everything else Fincher has ever done
I agree, but I fail to understand why Zodiac is sitting among the ten most acclaimed films of the year over at the Movie City News poll? It's a competent, above average film, but nothing really extraordinary, nothing that wouldn't have been done 20 years ago as a TV miniseries; the only difference being that now we have Jake Gyllenhaal and Mark Ruffalo, whereas then we'd have Stepfanie Kramer and Richard Crenna.

Nice to see that even a "critic's" group can have as middlebrow taste as the Academy. Although at least this list for Best Director and Best Actor is sure to be better than the Oscar list. And actually big props to the OFCS for recognizing Kelly MacDonald -- probably the only person I'd like to see win over Amy Ryan.

Yeah, cam, I know you can't stand Blanchett, but why would you assume she was the last-place finisher among the nominees, when her performance has finished second in most other critics' derbies this year? Any of the others -- save Ryan -- seem more likely to have been the lucky one.
Now, if we were talking about the Elizabeth thing, that'd be a different story.

Uh-oh!
Not only was Casey Affleck nominated in the wrong category this time, he was nominated for the wrong FILM!
Clearly his nomination should have been for Juno! Anyone who has seen the amazing subtlety and complexity of Affleck's performance could easily realize that Jennifer Garner's work in Juno was clearly coached by her brother-in-law. In fact, I bet they worked off set together, with Garner learning to mimic Affleck! How else could her performance achieve such levels of plasticity?
So a nomination I support, but we all know the wrong picture is getting the attention.
