Overall, great.

My only disappointment is all those presumably middle-aged fangirl votes for Elvis, including Best Actor.

I predicted wins for Blanchett, Keoghan and Condon, but I'm shocked that Farrell didn't win as well for Banshees.

I knew something other than EEAAO and Banshees would win Picture and Director. I was thinking that it would be Tár, but I'm not at all bummed out that AQOTWF won instead.

Career achievement awards, in memoriam segment.

Also, it seems that the last four awards are going to be presented on TV live and must be positioned to fit into that 30-minute window. The rest of the show is edited for broadcast.

Apparently, when Kotsur signed "Kerry", it was mistakenly thought for a moment that Carey Mulligan had won.

I'm delighted but shocked about Keoghan's win.

And, yes, the children at Awaards Worthy are already off and running with Racist BAFTA.

Everything Everywhere taking editing is obviously helpful, but may more be a "we don't take this Top Gun bullshit seriously" statement from BAFTA. Losing what seemed a slam dunk supporting actor award suggests the "it's so beloved" narrative around Everything may be premature.

a) BAFTA has never been that kind to American indies (or British indies, for that matter) or just smaller films in general. Ryan Gosling for Half Nelson, The Savages for Linney/Jenkins, Richard Jenkins for The Visitor. I don't think there's anything particularly wrong with that [to be honest, I don't get how BAFTA is so good at honoring British television but so disinterested in honoring British filmmaking), but I don't think it's a meaningful strike against Riseborough either. For me, whenever we get a race where a couple of candidates are just destroying the field and hoovering up the number one votes, I think that pockets of support might be enough for a performer to breakthrough (which is why I actually wonder if De Armas AND someone like Thompson can make it in - I'm not sure if the McCormack nomination is telling or just deluding me about the latter, though).

b) Yeah, we got our answer about All Quiet on the Western Front.

c) I think you could study Women Talking about how NOT to run a campaign, though. I still haven't even had the chance to see it and that's infuriating.

d) No Top Gun is a bit of a relief.

e) Lots of car crash categories, which is always fun

It's a grass roots campaign by Amy Adams and other actors. Obama revised his 10 best list to include it.

Or they don't have the money. That stuff is expensive. Or maybe they don't run Oscar campaigns and this truly is a grassroots campaign orchestrated by Andrea Riseborough and her friends. Independent filmmaking is an incredibly risky venture where the best you can hope is to break even.

It was an October release in the US and a November release in Israel of all places. I honestly don't think they thought it would have much chance and were going to dump it. It was released in the US by Momentum, which I don't think I've ever heard of, which also explains why they weren't prepared for any last-minute acclaim. They probably don't even have a clue how to run an Oscar campaign.

It isn't "terrible" marketing; it isn't always easy or simple to get international distribution deals for small independent films.

Further proof that their marketing efforts were terrible.
