Tree of Life has, I believe, been confirmed for this year -- and The Tempest has been pushed to 2010.
Not only did the new At the Movies boys trash The Burning Plain, it's been running on IFC on Demand, which I'm led to believe is a disqualifier.

A.O. Scott, in his his first stint as co-host of At the Movies, totally ridiculed The Burning Plain with the cattiest review I've ever seen by anyone starting with "Kim Basinger plays Charlize Theron's mother".
Michelle Pfeiffer's Cheri opened to tepid reviews and fizzled at the box office.
The key female roles in Nine are those played by Penelope Cruz and Judi Dench, and to some extent, Marion Cotillard, not those played by Sophia Loren and Kate Hudson, though Loren could possibly grab some sentimental votes if the film has an unprecedented four nominees in Supporting Actress.
Among those worth considering: Carrie Mulligan (An Education); Shoreh Aghashloo (The Stoning of Shoraya M.) and Gibourey Sidibe (Precious) for Best Actress and Mo'nique (Precious) and Rachel Weistz (The Lovely Bones) for Supporting Actress.

Is Tree of Life going to be released this year? I worked on it, but I haven't heard anything about it being released this year. If it's nominated, that would be really cool because that would mean that I worked on a Best Picture nominee, even though I was the lowliest of production assistants. I hardly ever set foot onset, and never during shooting. But still, it would make up for the mistake I made a couple years ago when I passed on doing PA work on No Country for Old Men because I didn't want to be out in the middle of nowhere in West Texas for two months. I'm still kicking myself for that one.

Only for the Spirit Awards. Films like Whale Rider and City of God have received nominations in this manner.

Finally! I have been holding onto my predix for a very long time. I was wondering when OscarGuy would be ready for us to start this discussion.
Obviously these are highly subject to change. With SHUTTER ISLAND out (boo) and THE TREE OF LIFE in (yay) as well as several other schedule changes, I really been thrown for a loop in a number of categories.
Also, I still have no idea what this whole ten best picture nominees will mean. In the years past where there were ten on the ballot, sometimes you would have nominees which were not nominated in any other categories. The closest we have had that situation recently was FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL being nominated for only screenplay and yet still being nominated for best picture. Not sure how much of that will happen this year, but I am still praying to the movie goddesses the Academy will come to their senses and change it back to five nominees. They still have time!
