Best Actress 1982
I think Mister Tee's analysis of Streep's performance nails down every thing that's awful about her in Sophie's Choice. She doesn't create a character, she gives a Master Class in technique. Something like that can work on stage, but it's anathema to celluloid and is, frankly, a terrible piece of film acting. Fun Party Game: Put on the DVD of Sophie’s Choice and take a shot every time Streep touches her face.
Debra Winger is fine in An Officer And A Gentleman, but nothing about that film is particularly interesting and no one involved with it should have been remotely near the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on Oscar night. I liked her better in Urban Cowboy and, especially, the forgotten Cannery Row from earlier in '82.
Lange is very, very good in Frances and, as Tee points out should be given credit for not sugar-coating the character. Even so, there is still something a bit too later-day Susan Hayward here for the performance to be truly top-tier.
I think Spacek is just about perfect in Missing, and DWS really nails down the complexity of the performance. Her character is perhaps slightly secondary to Lemmon’s in the narrative, but emotionally she matches him every step of the way. (And I think Lemmon is by far the best of the 5 Actor nominees this year, but he and Spacek work very much in tandem. And I also think Missing is easily the best of 82’s Picture nominees, and the only one worthy of a nomination.)
But I cannot vote for Spacek when Julie Andrews is in the running for one of the greatest comic and musical (or musical comedy) performances in film history. Her comic timing is pitch perfect, her performance perfectly captures the naiveté of Victoria in the early part of the picture, and the assuredness of Victor and then the confusion and anxiety arising when she falls in love. Andrew performs with delicious wit, and a hugely appealing mix of assuredness and vulnerability. That she didn’t win is a crime against nature, and equally appalling were the fact that Robert Preston and Lesley Ann Warren also went home empty-handed.
My own Top 5:
1. Julie Andrews in Victor/Victoria
2. Sissy Specek in Missing
3. Valeria d’Obici in Passione d’Amore
4. Debra Winger in Cannery Row (but not An Officer And A Gentleman)
5. Rosel Zech in Veronika Voss

"Y'know, that's one of the things I like about Mitt Romney. He's been consistent since he changed his mind." -- Christine O'Donnell
I think Mister Tee's assessment of the 1982 race is pretty much spot on.....although I thought Sissy Spacek and Julie Andrews deserved to be on the list while I don't see how Debra Winger could make it while Diane Keaton missed out.
My top 5 performances of 1982:
Meryl Streep, Sophie's Choice
Diane Keaton, Shoot the Moon
Julie Andrews, Victor/Victoria
Jessica Lange, Frances
Sissy Spacek, Missing

Yeah, jowly jilla, nice work doing these surveys, but maybe slow it down a little, so we can savor each race.
We've been discussing this particular contest, at least indirectly, in the Last Seen Movie thread. So I barely need reiterate that I think Diane Keaton gave one of her career-best performances in Shoot the Moon, and should have easily made the list.
I'm as fond of Spacek as the next guy, but I don't think Missing gives her all that much to do. I find the role dangerously close to The Girlfriend. (I'm not remotely as big a fan of Lemmon's -- I was in fact mortally sick of him by '82 -- but I think he waltzes off with the film's acting honors) If she were off the list, I wouldn't miss her.
Victor/Victoria is another movie that really defines the gay/straight divide. I've never known a single gay person who didn't adore it -- nor have I ever known a straight man who was more than middling toward it. I think it's enjoyable enough (if a half hour too long), and the performances are fun, but none that I'd single out for an Oscar win, Julie included. (I thought Julie did give an excellent performance a few years down the road, in That's Life)
I fell in love/lust with Debra Winger in Urban Cowboy and was disappointed she failed to be nominated there (esp. over such as Diana Scarwid). I didn't much care for the warmed-over mush that was An Officer and a Gentleman, but I once again loved Winger, and was happy to see her get recognition -- though a nomination was as far as she deserved to go.
Lange certainly made a breakthrough with Frances, and she took some daring steps with the role -- making Farmer unsympathetic at key moments, rather than the put-upon martyr a lesser actress might have gone for. (I saw the film with a friend who's a psychologist, and his comment was, "She wasn't crazy, but she wasn't exactly well-adjusted, either") I can see why many support her.
I can also see the problems people have with Streep in Sophie's Choice. If simple, unadorned, direct acting is what you're seeking, this performance will be anathema to you. It seems to undertake from the start to be a monumental piece of work: a great technician displaying every tool in her arsenal, letting the audience know every minute how hard she's working. The killer is, I think she pulls it off -- her Sophie IS a monumental creation (despite Pakula's nearly unbelievably dead direction). I respect the right to dissent from praising such work. In the end, though, I have to line up and salute. It's not the performance from the 80s I'd rank as my favorite, or would even much care to see again. But I knew I was in the presence of something major.
So, if you're keeping score, I'd vote Streep first, Keaton if she were around second, Lange a strong third, with the rest just hanging around the race. All tolled a far stronger year for lead actresses (and actors, too) than 1981.

This is the only Best Actress lineup to feature Lange, Spacek, and Streep, but they were undeniably the actresses of the 80's--at least in terms of mainstream Hollywood. Every year from 1980 to 1990 one of the three was nominated in this category.
Debra Winger didn't have any business being nominated. She's fine, but the same performance in a flop wouldn't have made it to the Oscars.
I understand the acclaim behind Streep's performance, but I don't subscribe. (I'm afraid she's going to start a big table-run here that will rival Hepburn's.) I run hot and cold on Streep, but in Sophie's Choice she comes off as too studied, and so technical that it becomes almost mechanical and soulless. Bottom line for me is that this is possibly the prime example of her tendency to emphasize technique over feeling.
I think Victor/Victoria is the best of Andrews's nominated performances, and Lange is excellent in Frances. Both would've been very deserving winners. But I'm voting for Spacek. Spacek doesn't work with the big dramatic fireworks that some of the other nominees here (Lange, Streep) do, but her performance is a fascinating look at a certain kind of person: politically committed, but lacking any real savvy or tact; the stress of living day-to-day, minute-to-minute, but with traces of Spacek's earthiness and resolve. I think Spacek, Lemmon, and the movie all should've won.

Streep was the year's best actress but since she's already won here for her lesser work in The French Lieutenant's Woman while Julie Andrews has been snubbed twice, I give it to Julie.
The others are all OK, as is Diane Keaton who narrowly missed a nomination for Shoot the Moon, but Streep, heartbreaking and sad, and Andrews, funny, sharp and singing as beautifully as ever, are the performances from this year to treasure.

I Have only seen three of these performances, but still I can say that easily Meryl Streep will win my vote. It's probably one of the best performances of all time
Andrews is my runner-up.
Lange also gives a very strong performance, but I can't get the praise that this should have won instead of Streep.
I would also want to include the wonderful performance by Sandy Dennis in Come Back to Five and Dime. But I don't know much more about this year for leading actresses, so please can someone recommend some more actresses that were contenders this year.
