I'm mildly surprised that Frost/Nixon has done so well. I didn't think it would become a major player beyond Langella. Doesn't look like the decision to push Michael Sheen as a co-lead (quite laudable in this era of blatant fraud) is set to pay off, but the film looks like a contender.

This could well be a year where the populist hits break into the major categories. I still have my doubts over The Dark Knight's chances beyond techs and Ledger, but a Downey nomination is becoming a very strong possibility.

If Winslet's 'lead' film falls off the radar, would they risk switching her to lead for The Reader, where by all accounts she belongs, to give her a chance at a lead Oscar? She may have an easier job besting Ann Hathaway and Meryl Streep than in supporting, where Penelope Cruz could become a strong frontrunner.

And what to make of Clint. I'm sure some haters must have cited his NBR win as a fluke, but here he is again. Gran Torino may well be a film with a lot of haters, but he's looking very good for a best actor nomination, and if this is indeed his swansong as actor, how big are his chances of pulling off a win? If Clint and Heath are the acting winners, just how teary an Oscar ceremony could this be?

Tee > Puh-lease! Just let me enjoy the thought that Beckinsale/Farmiga can make it all the way to the Oscars, OK?!

Dammit! They should have added Alan Alda as the 6th nominee to the Supporting Actor category. THREE acting nominees will "force" the Oscar voters to check out this "brutally under-seen" film!

SUPER DUPER YAY for Beckinsale & Farmiga.

Regardless, BFCC is quite an accurate precursor and I won't be surprised if their acting nominees match with the eventual Oscar nominees.

To answer Tee's comments from another thread, it seems that BFCA, ever since they became Critics' Choice, have become the media/star whores that the Golden Globes used to be. Even the Globes have managed to push towards respectability. Of course when you have cheerleaders like Tom O'Neil in your corner, you can't help but be the worst kind of group. The kind who doesn't vote on the quality of achievement, but what kind of soundbite it makes when it hits the Oscar red carpet. They have really begun to grate on my nerves lately and their "live" announcement is more proof (which they did last year, too), that they are trying to replace the Golden Globes as the preeminent Oscar love fest of the year...

Yeah, that's very interesting. Not a single nomination.

Only last night I heard these were being announced live, and, since I was up at 8:30, I watched. My main thought throughout was, ah, my wonderful whores...you take dictation as well as ever.

Push The Dark Knight hard? Check. Promote the Downey Jr. campaign? Check. Pretend Seymour Hoffman and Winslet are supporting? Check. Pick out the industry-approved veteran indie players (Leo and Jenkins)? Check.

The only guts play, from the point of view of a group that would rather disband than miss an important Oscar nomination, is the complete blackballing of Revolutionary Road. I'm not sure I'm in sync with dws on this -- apart from the obvious casting coup, I don't think the film represents the middle-brow Oscar bait before which this group generally genuflects. From all I hear, it's a tough, bruising film, thus less likely to appeal to the Gene Shalits of the world than something pretend-controversial like Doubt. Nevertheless, given that yesterday's New York Magazine cited Winslet's performance as the year's best, it's certainly a statement for this group to leave her (and Shannon, and DiCaprio) out without a word.

If Winslet is truly not part of the race this year, I have zero idea how the category will go. Anne Hathaway could even win the Oscar.

Other mildly resonant omissions: Scott Thomas for lead actress, and Dewitt for supporting.

And of course a big plus for Beckinsale/Farmiga. We'll see if it's a one-off.

Otherwise, this confirms industry buzz, that Milk, Slumdog and Benjamin Button are the core of this year's competition. Yes, I see all the nods for Dark Knight, and that MAY join them -- but I don't think this group, so studio-solicitous, is the acid test for its status.

So if the two most mainstream "critics" groups don't go at all for Revolutionary Road, which looked like the most obvious, critic-friendly Oscar bait of the year, then I'm wondering if it has much chance anywhere else.
