Finally saw Isabelle Adjani's performance in The Story of Adele H. She is, indeed, very good and deserved all the critics awards. What astonished me the most was that she spoke such good english in the film.
I have added her to my list below but still feel that Suchitra Sen - a great Bengali star - gave a far better performance in the Indian film, Aandhi / The Storm (based partly on the life of the former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi)

Although this was indeed a pretty weak year for the ladies, I couldn't possibly disagree with you more about Ann-Margret. I thought she was marvelous; easily one of my favorite performances in a musical ever.

Ann-Margret's nod for Tommy was quite absurd!!! A case of filling in the slot as 1975 was a remarkably weak year for female stars in Hollywood. Adjani made it on the strength of her performance and all the critics prizes she won. Pity they did not nominate Florinda Bolkan's acclaimed performance as well. Also a pity that Indian films from that era were not noticed as there were two remarkable performances by two leading ladies in Hindi films that year - coincidently both actresses are Bengali, one making a rare foray into Hindi cinema and one who was an established star and married to a Bollywood icon.
More on them later when I post my list for 1975.
