I felt Breslin was the best thing in Little Miss Sunshine. Paul Dano was funnier than Arkin. To me, Arkin had no money scene 'cause he came up dead too early. The only reasoning I can see for his win is his veteran status.

I don't know, but this had to hit Eddie hard. It may not have cost him the Oscar, but I really think he should have pushed back the release date of Nortbit to be ont he safe side.

Nevertheless, I thought Arkin was the best thing in LMS and I don't mind him winning.

What did Arkin do in Little Miss Sunshine that's Oscar-worthy? For spitting out expletives & loving porn?

i don't think it was a bias against comedians, it might have been a bias against eddie murphy, i hope not but i understand he doesn't have the best reputation...who knows.....this has been in my opinion the worst year for this catorgory in a long time....my favorites were ninomiya, affleck as well as haley...but all five of the nominees were good, nothing wrong with any of them...so i have a feeling the voting was very close.....and arkins been around for a long time...so...he got it.

in case O'Toole triumphs later, would it be the first time in Oscar history that two actors playing Dirty Old Man roles triumph in Leading and Supporting Actor categories respectively?

I think bias against comedians in dramatic roles is the cause.

Especially when you think about Aykroyd and Murray. SNL alums aren't going to win ever, I don't think.

Remember when Full Monty won Best Comedy Score? Completely unexpected but it was a BP nominee and wasn't going to win.
I don't really think those two are comparable. LMS is almost certain to win Screenplay which gives it the tally Crash had last year before winning Picture. Plus The Full Monty had NO shot. LMS has already won the PGA and SAG.

I hope you're right because I hated LMS. But I really don't think we can write this off as a bone throw win yet.

Hmmm, I wonder what this means for Hudson? Earlier in the opening, I heard lots of applause for Adriana Barraza and assumed that Eddie would get the Oscar while she lost out in a huge upset.

Would the Academy have the guts to snub BOTH Eddie and Jennifer tonight?

"Then topsy turvy. Me topsy, them turvy." One of my favorite old Arkin lines. How apropos. Glad he got his Oscar.

Well even though i preferred little miss sunshine to dreamgirls, i did think murphy was better then arkin....but arkin was not a horrible choice and he's one of my favorite actors from back in the day and continues to be great in role after role(13 conversations about one thing, slums of beverly hills, indian summer, glengarry), so i didnt' mind...as for the speech, he like the other guy actor thats going to get an oscar later, obviously does not enjoy having to go up there and talk...so cut him a break. And he did do a good job with that part, not the best but a very good job.

I agree. I'm glad he made it into the winners circle. For my money, he should have won four years ago for 13 Conversations About One Thing.

He would not have been my choice, but I'm happy for him nonetheless--he's always been a favorite of mine.
