Here's the original article. I assume it's on the level.
"...it is the weak who are cruel, and...gentleness is only to be expected from the strong." - Leo Reston
"Cruelty might be very human, and it might be cultural, but it's not acceptable." - Jodie Foster

From The Sun:
Sacha is Boraxed from flick
December 14, 2006
SACHA BARON COHEN’S singing has been slashed from new movie Sweeney Todd — because it is so terrible.
Director TIM BURTON is transforming the STEPHEN SONDHEIM musical Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street, into an epic film due out next year.
JOHNNY DEPP is in the lead role (the sixth time he has worked with Tim). Tim’s partner HELENA BONHAM CARTER plays Mrs Lovett, the baker.
Sacha will play Signor Adolfo Pirelli, Sweeney’s hairdressing rival.
Sound rehearsals and recordings are under way but Sacha struggled to pull off a convincing operatic performance for the many songs his character has.
So Burton decided chop them — and to allow Sacha to “rap” his tunes.
A source on the production revealed: “Pirelli is a notoriously demanding role with some difficult songs.
“Any professional singer would struggle. So Sacha has been told to go for a rap style. It will be a bit like JIM BROADBENT’s performance in Moulin Rouge. That won him a Bafta.
“There was never any question of Sacha being axed from the movie.
“He is going to do a fantastic job. But he couldn’t cut it with the singing. His voice was too low.”
The cast are laying all their vocals down before filming starts. Then they will just lip sync when the cameras are rolling.

According to an interview, Helena Bonham-Carter said yes. She tested for Sondheim before she was officially on-board.cam wrote:Does Sondheim have any approval of these things?
Sondheim mentioned in a special forum about a year ago when Sam Mendes was still on-board as director that he signed over the film rights because he liked John Logan's script.
Somebody said "bring back Angela Lansbury". If she can still MOVE, bring her back and dub her voice. And what's wrong with Len Cariou?
Too reasons:
01. They're a tad too old now.
02. They won't have the kids lining up for tickets.
That, Sonic, is a great idea. Johnny Depp for that brawny menacing role? Piffle. Helen Bonham Carter? It is to laugh.
Does Sondheim have any approval of these things? Maybe hae has washed his hands of it, after last year's Broadway effort. Sweeney Todd is one of his best musicals, and should be given the "Oliver" treatment, at least.

The judge is in no way a small role, and it is a musically complex role. Just because it is not as vocally challenging as the two leads doesn't mean that it isn't simple. Alan Rickman is probably the best choice they have made so far, but it is still disappointing. If Burton were making a film of Bond's play, this would be fantastic. Making a film of Sondheim's musical, it is a disaster in the making.

The Judge is a small part after all; many actors could sing this part. It does NOT require a Frankie Valli.
Who would you rather see in the role, Sonic?
This guy.
Here's my pick for Sweeney.
Mrs. Lovett.
The Beadle.
Anthony.
Johanna
Pirelli
Toby
The beggar woman
"What the hell?"

According to this video, Alan Rickman says he's been cast in Sweeney Todd. I'll assume he's Judge Turpin.
