I think we are. At least, I've always taken it that way, not having read the book. I might have to rethink now.
Incidently, good though Tandy was, I've always held that Masterson's performance steals the film, and deserved a nomination more.
If we're re-writing history here, don't you think her nomination should've been for Frankie and Johnny?--the critic wrote:SUPPORTING ACTRESS

I love Jessica Tandy's performance in Fried Green Tomatoes. She's such a hoot. One question though: are we supposed to think that she, herself, is Idgie Threadgoode (Mary Stuart Masterson's character) at the end of the movie when Kathy Bates finds the honey at Ruth's grave? If you've read the book, she is clearly not but I always felt like the movie deliberately left it up in the air.
"The mantle of spinsterhood was definitely in her shoulders. She was twenty five and looked it."

"I want cement covering every blade of grass in this nation! Don't we taxpayers have a voice anymore?" Peggy Gravel (Mink Stole) in John Waters' Desperate Living (1977)
Oh, Fishburne was amazing. That's not the problem. The problem is that the film can't go five minutes without tripping over a soapbox. I understand the point that Singleton is trying to make (and his nomination over Streisand is a well-deserved triumph), but his screenplay and hyper directing refuses to let characters behave for very long.
It's a very well-intentioned and powerful film so I feel bad saying anything cruel about it, but it feels like the kind of message movie Stanley Kramer used to make. But it has moments, amazing moments. The Best Supporting Actor lineup that year must have been an all-time low in the category's history (I would've picked Kingsley, or maybe Lerner). No John Goodman, no Samuel L. Jackson, no Rip Torn (Defending Your Life, hilarious perf. in a very underrated film)...and that's not even bringing up that whole Hopkins debate again.

I think Boyz N the Hood was incredible. Sure its a film full of speeches, but its directed so well that the speeches work. I believed Furious could gather people in a crowd and tell them about the truths of black neighborhoods aand how the white man opresses them still. Its smart and impressive filmmaking.
Fishburne should have won Best Supporting Actor.
