The legendary hipster, curmudgeon, and bar none best music man died of a heart attack at 61. Likely no way was he ever coming close to an Oscars ceremony, but the man was one of the most important figures in (un)popular and alternative music for the past four decades. His list of production (or as he preferred, "recording engineered") credits is unreal: The Jesus Lizard, In Utero, Joanna Newsom's Ys, PJ Harvey, Sunn O))), Magnolia Electric Co., to name a few of literally thousands. Shocking and painful loss considering how many of my favorites he had a hand in.
