They do have two breakthrough TV categories but not for acting. Interesting.

Last I looked at their website, they didn't have a breakthrough performance category this year.

The Gotham Awards honoring independent awards have been around since 1991. Initially acting awards were only given for breakthrough performances. Beginning with the 2013 awards, they broke acting awards down between Outstanding Actor, Outstanding Actress, Outstanding Breakthrough Actor, and Outstanding Breakthrough Actress.

They again changed categories with their 2021 awards, distinguishing between Outstanding Lead Performance (regardless of gender), Outstanding Supporting Performance, and Outstanding Breakthrough Performance.

In the past, there was supposedly a rule, either written or unwritten, that put a cap on both the cost of a film and its box-office take. That rule pretty much went by the wayside last year with the Outstanding Feature win for Everything Everywhere All at Once. This year, they seem to have gone back to their previous standards when it comes to Outstanding Feature - none of the nominees except from the low budget Past Lives has even a remote shot a Best Picture Oscar nomination. Conversely, their acting nominees are all over the place from virtual unknowns to Ryan Gosling in the blockbuster Barbie.

I wouldn't go so far as to consider the Gothams a viable Oscar precursor but some of their picks may give the actor's branch of the Academy something to chew on.

All of Us Strangers, which is also nominated for Outstanding International Feature and Screenplay, is the only film with two acting nods - for lead player Andrew Scott and supporting player Claire Foy.

They have nominated Gosling but not Margot Robbie for Barbie, Da' Vine Joy Randolph but not Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers, Charles Melton but not Julianne Moore for May December, and Sandra Huller in support for The Zone of Interest but not in lead for Anatomy of a Fall.

Lily Gladstone is nominated for one of her lesser-known independent films instead of Killers of the Flower Moon for which she will undoubtedly receive an Oscar nomination. Penélope Cruz is nominated for the upcoming Ferrari. Gotham favorites Colman Domingo in Rustin and John Magaro in Past Lives are not nominated.

Could any of these be foreshadowing's of things to come or are they just the Gothams doing their thing?

Sandra Huller is in the running for lead in Anatomy of a Fall and support in Zone of Interest and could become the first performer to be nominated in lead and support in the same year for non-English language films.

I thought Sandra Hüller was being predicted in the lead category. Here she is placed in support.
