Re: Final Oscar Predictions
I think the musical performer curse isn't one you can use against Lady Gaga. She is a prior nominee after all. I just think the Academy hated her movie. She was the best thing about it, which isn't saying a lot.

Wow! Thank you.Mister Tee wrote:Scrolling through these predictions, I think rolotomasi99 deserves kudos, for being the only one to nail the very difficult best actress category.
I just refused to believe they were going to nominate Lady Gaga. I like her music, but so far am not impressed with her acting.
Also, I was admittedly indulging in some wish fulfillment by predicting both Kristen Stewart and Penelope Cruz, but I am so damn happy it actually happened.

Re: Final Oscar Predictions
Every year there are 1-2 nominations make me mad as hell and i can't explain them. This year i thought that this could be one of them. Most of the people i know have seen the film, same have enjoyed it, most haven't (to put it mildly). So since it's one of the most viewed films of the year, i thought that it could be a filler of spots 7-10 in many Oscar voters' top10, if these voters haven't seen many films. I am thrilled i was wrongSabin wrote:I'd be interested in your reasoning on this.Cinemanolis wrote

The Academy voting ended two days before the BAFTA nominations were announced. Are we expecting that much crossover, especially considering that BAFTA uses committees for several categories now?Mister Tee wrote:

Re: Final Oscar Predictions
It was Hoop Dreams, actually...which got famously snubbed in the Documentary category. There are a few people who are predicting the exact same thing may happen to Summer of Soul.Mister Tee wrote:

Re: Final Oscar Predictions
1. Best Film
Belfast
CODA
Don't Look Up
Drive My Car
Dune
King Richard
Licorice Pizza
The Power of the Dog
tick…tick…Boom!
West Side Story
alts.: The Tragedy of Macbeth, Being the Ricardos, Nightmare Alley
I gave my rationale in the other thread.
2. Best Actor
Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog)
Leonardo DiCaprio (Don’t Look Up)
Andrew Garfield (tick…tick…Boom!)
Will Smith (King Richard)
Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth)
alts.: Javier Bardem (Being the Ricardos); Hidetoshi Nishijima (Drive My Car); Peter Dinklage (Cyrano)
BAFTA nominating not only DiCaprio but Don’t Look Up for best film persuades me this is most likely. It’s not ideal, but preferable to Bardem (this year; in career terms, Bardem is of course better). The other alternates would be more pleasing still.
3. Best Actress
Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye)
Olivia Colman (The Lost Daughter)
Lady Gaga (House of Gucci)
Alana Haim (Licorice Pizza)
Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos)
alts.: Penelope Cruz (Parallel Mothers); Kristen Stewart (Spencer)
Talk to me in an hour, I’ll give you a different answer. No one is safe. I’d much prefer the two alternates over Gaga and, especially, Kidman.
4. Best Supporting Actor
Bradley Cooper (Licorice Pizza)
Ciaran Hinds (Belfast)
Troy Kotsur (CODA)
Jesse Plemons (The Power of the Dog)
Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Power of the Dog)
alts.: Mike Faist (West Side Story), Jared Leto (House of Gucci), J.K. Simmons (Being the Ricardos)
This may be a bit vanilla a final five for what’s been a volatile category. Mike Faist has been an instinct of mine most of the season, but I chickened out on him at the last moment.
5. Best Supporting Actress
Caitriona Balfe (Belfast)
Ariana Debose (West Side Story)
Kirsten Dunst (The Power of the Dog)
Aunjanue Ellis (King Richard)
Ruth Negga (Passing)
alts.: Cate Blanchett (Nightmare Alley), Jessie Buckley (The Lost Daughter), Ann Dowd (Mass)
The category most likely to go according to the chalk.
6. Best Director
Paul Thomas Anderson (Licorice Pizza)
Kenneth Branagh (Belfast)
Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog)
Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car)
Denis Villeneuve (Dune)
alts.: Joel Coen (The Tragedy of Macbeth), Steven Spielberg (West Side Story), Pedro Almodovar (Parallel Mothers)
See other thread for reasoning.
7. Best Adapted Screenplay
CODA
Drive My Car
The Lost Daughter
The Power of the Dog
tick, tick…Boom!
alts.: Dune, The Tragedy of Macbeth, West Side Story
Ditto. I may be short-changing Dune.
8. Best Original Screenplay
Belfast
Don’t Look Up
King Richard
Licorice Pizza
Parallel Mothers
alts.: The French Dispatch, Being the Ricardos, The Worst Person in the World
Wavering on the marginals –- French Dispatch, King Richard, Parallel Mothers all shaky.
9. Best Cinematography
Belfast
Dune
Nightmare Alley
The Power of the Dog
The Tragedy of Macbeth
alts.: West Side Story, The Green Knight
Kaminski missing ASC was bad enough; also missing BAFTA seems really fatal.
10. Best Costume Design
Cruella
Cyrano
Dune
House of Gucci
West Side Story
alts.: The French Dispatch, Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley
Mark Bridges has scored unexpected nominations (Inherent Vice, Joker), so Pizza may slip in. I could do several more alternates, here.
11. Best Production Design
Dune
The French Dispatch
Nightmare Alley
The Tragedy of Macbeth
West Side Story
alts.: Licorice Pizza, Cyrano, Belfast
Another stacked bunch. Alternates could easily slip in.
12. Best Sound Mixing
Dune
No Time to Die
The Power of the Dog
tick, tick...BOOM!
West Side Story
alts.: Last Night in Soho, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Belfast
13. Best Film Editing
Belfast
Dune
Licorice Pizza
The Power of the Dog
Tick, Tick...Boom!
alts.: Don’t Look Up, King Richard, Summer of Soul
What’s the last documentary to get a nomination here? Was it Woodstock? Summer of Soul would be wildly deserving. As for West Side Story, its miss at ACE was maybe its most damaging moment of the season, but if it revives, this is a place it could show strength.
14. Best Score
Dune
Encanto
The French Dispatch
Parallel Mothers
The Power of the Dog
alts.: Don’t Look Up, Spencer, The Tragedy of Macbeth
A bunch of veteran nominees.
15. Best Visual Effects
Dune
Free Guy
The Matrix Resurrections
No Time to Die
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
alts.: Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Godzilla vs. Kong
Like the Gravity year, it’s Pick the four losers, about which no one will care.
16. Best Make-up
Coming 2 America
Cruella
Dune
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
House of Gucci
alts.: The Suicide Squad, Cyrano, Nightmare Alley
That Oscar Expert guy is mostly tiresome (every prediction based on someone else’s list; he never takes a flyer on something). But he made a worthy observation on this category: every time there’s old-guy prosthetic make-up -– even in crap movies like Life or Jackass -– this branch nominates it. Hence, Coming 2 America. (I’d like to be wrong, so I don’t have to watch it.)
17. Best Song
Be Alive (King Richard)
Dos Oruguitas (Encanto)
Just Look Up (Don’t Look Up)
No Time to Die (No Time to Die)
Somehow You Do (Four Good Days)
alts.: Down to Joy (Belfast), Guns Go Bang (The Harder They Fall), Here I Am (Singing My Way Home) (Respect)
Until they veto a Diane Warren obscurity, I’m going to keep predicting her.
18. Best Foreign Language Film
Iran, A Hero
Italy, The Hand of God
Japan, Drive My Car
Mexico, Prayers for the Stolen
Norway, The Worst Person in the World
alts.: Denmark, Flee; Finland, Compartment No. 6; Bhutan, Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom
We’ve had some pretty stellar International categories of late – you could argue, as in 2018, this category outshines best picture.
19. Best Animated Feature
Belle
Encanto
Luca
The Mitchells vs the Machines
Raya and the Last Dragon
alts.: Flee, Sing 2
20. Best Documentary Feature
Ascension
Flee
Procession
The Rescue
Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)
alts.: In the Same Breath, Writing with Fire, Attica
dws is correct, that it would be very like this branch to box out Summer of Soul. Hoping they don’t.

It's our second year of predicting Oscars in the new normal. Box office doesn't matter. Streaming platform vs. theatrical doesn't matter.

In another year, I think the Academy would only go to eight, if not seven. I think the story of the day will be "Netflix sets record with most titles in competition." I may not love Drive My Car but I would love it if it ended up in the final ten. Why expand the roster if not to include the international choice of the year? But it feels like wish-fulfillment to me.

Re: Final Oscar Predictions
Best Picture
Belfast
CODA
Don’t Look Up
Dune
King Richard
Licorice Pizza
Nightmare Alley
The Power of the Dog
Spider-Man: No Way Home
West Side Story
I'm predicting Spider-Man: No Way Home even though the box-office champion doesn't seem to have much of a chance because I would hate to override it with something else and see it nominated anyway. Nightmare Alley, which I seem to be fonder of than anyone else, falls into the same thought pattern. Everything else is likely to be nominated.
Best Director
Belfast – Kenneth Branagh
Dune – Denis Villenueve
Licorice Pizza – Paul Thomas Anderson
The Power of the Dog – Jane Campion
West Side Story – Steven Spielberg
I'm predicting a straight DGA to Oscar match-up though that may not hold. If not, Spielberg would seem to be likely director out.
Best Actor
Benedict Cumberbatch – The Power of the Dog
Peter Dinklage - Cyrano
Andrew Garfield – tick, tick, Boom!
Will Smith – King Richard
Denzel Washington – The Tragedy of Macbeth
Peter Dinklage hasn't really caught on, which surprises me, but the others are all likely nominees.
Best Actress
Jessica Chastain – The Eyes of Tammy Faye
Oliva Colman – The Lost Daughter
Penélope Cruz – Parallel Mothers
Nicole Kidman – Being the Ricardos
Lady Gaga – House of Gucci
These are the likely five as I see them.
Best Supporting Actor
Jamie Dornan - Belfast
Mike Faist – West Side Story
Ciaran Hinds - Belfast
Troy Kotsur - CODA
Kodi Smit-McPhee – The Power of the Dog
I would prefer to see Jesse Plemons nominated instead of Troy Kotsur but I seem to be in the minority on that one.
Best Supporting Actress
Caitriona Balfe - Belfast
Ariana DeBose – West Side Story
Judi Dench - Belfast
Kirsten Dunst – The Power of the Dog
Ruth Negga – Passing
If not Judi Dench, then Martha Plimpton or Ann Dowd for Mass.

Drive My Car

Alt: The Tragedy of Macbeth, Being the Ricardos
Best Director
Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Drive My Car
Denis Villenueve, Dune
Paul Thomas Anderson, Licorice Pizza
Jane Campion, The Power of the Dog
Steven Spielberg, West Side Story
Alt: Adam McKay, Don't Look Up
Best Actor
Benedict Cumberbatch, The Power of the Dog
Andrew Garfield, tick, tick...BOOM!
Hidetoshi Nishijima, Drive My Car
Will Smith, King Richard
Denzel Washington, The Tragedy of Macbeth
Alt: Leonardo DiCaprio, Don't Look Up, Javier Bardem, Being the Ricardos
I think that if Drive My Car does get in Best Picture, it will do so with support from the above-the-line branches, including the actors, which I think would be enough to put Nishijima in that fifth spot.
Best Actress
Jessica Chastain, The Eyes of Tammy Faye
Olivia Colman, The Lost Daughter
Alana Haim, Licorice Pizza
Nicole Kidman, Being the Ricardos
Lady Gaga, House of Gucci
Alt: Kristen Stewart, Spencer or Emilia Jones, CODA
Maybe my dislike of Spencer is coming into play (although I thought Stewart was fine, more or less), but I don't think it's happening for Stewart.
Best Supporting Actor
Bradley Cooper, Licorice Pizza
Mike Faist, West Side Story
Ciaran Hinds, Belfast
Troy Kotsur, CODA
Kodi Smit-McPhee, The Power of the Dog
Alt: Jesse Plemons, The Power of the Dog, Ben Affleck, The Tender Bar
There's something not working with this group. Wouldn't be surprised to see a big shocker, like Stanfield last year, but I don't know who it would come from. Jason Isaacs in Mass is one who I constantly see people bringing up as an overlooked performance, but he (and the movie) hasn't shown up anywhere.
Best Supporting Actress
Caitriona Balfe, Belfast
Ariana DeBose, West Side Story
Kirsten Dunst, The Power of the Dog
Aujanue Ellis, King Richard
Ruth Negga, Passing
Alt: Jessie Buckley, The Lost Daughter, Ann Dowd, Mass
Call me crazy but I wouldn't be shocked if Dunst missed out here.
Best Original Screenplay

C'mon, C'mon
Don't Look Up
King Richard
Licorice Pizza
Alt: Being the Ricardos, The French Dispatch
I just can't fore myself to predict Sorkin gets a nomination for such a half-hearted effort. If I'm major wrong about a movie this year though, in terms of under-predicting it, I suspect it's Being the Ricardos.

I never have a clue here, so I just copy other people's picks. I guess Flee is a possibility, but this category hasn't been too friendly to adult-oriented animation and non-fiction animation.
Best International Feature
Drive My Car (Japan)
