What's Eating Gilbert Grape was not a serious contender for best picture in '93, but in retrospect it was a more deserving pick than the two Lasse Hallstrom films subsequently nominated - The Cider House Rules and Chocolat.

It's very interesting to see how much do u like What's eating Gilber Grape... I enjoyed it too, but maybe since I saw it a few years after its release (and obviously, after the Academy Awards), I never considered it a potential Best Picture nominee... actually, was it even near of getting the nod, how did it was in Oscar race that year?

I loved DiCaprio's performance but Fiennes is so great in Schindler's List that I've never been able to make up my mind. It isn't necessary to say that it is very disapponting that Tommy Lee Jones won it over them. I also believe that Lawrence Fishburne actually belonged to this category (particularly I believe that he should have been nominated over Malkovih... I remeber seen In the Line of Fire in its summer release and though I enjoy it nothing impressed me about it. Malkovich is just the bad guy!)

The firt time I saw Fearless I was nothing but amazed with Perez performance, but last year I saw it again and I foundt almost over the top. I'm happy with the actual choice of Paquin. The other could had been Ryder and in third place Thompson. Then I put Perez and finally Hunter.

I agree with you on the fact that Pfeiffer should have been nominated (over Winger), but I do like, and I like her a lot, Stockard Channing in Six Degrees of Separation... no way I would put her off...

Philadelphia is Hanks most deserved Oscar but I was so ashamed that Liam Neeson didn't win... He is so great in SL, he is absolutely perfect and amazingly strong that for me is one of the best male performances ever... and it is also sad because that was such a great year for male performance... I mean Hopkins too, painfully great, perfect... pure art in his face work... and Day-Lewis, though he would be my last choice was incredible too... maybe they did the right thing but I still do not know what to think about the first three...
