Note, Crouching Tiger was nineteen (now twenty) years ago. Boy, that's a thought.

Not necessarily.

Honeyland is nominated for both International Film and Documentary which I believe is a first. BAFTA did that one better with For Sama which it nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, Best Documentary and Best British Film.

Pain and Glory's only other nomination is for an actor who has been an American film star for thirty of his almost sixty years. It comes nineteen years after Antonio Banderas' nine years younger compatriot Javier Bardem's first nomination for a Spanish language performance in Before Night Falls.

Parasite, with its six Oscar nominations, doesn't quite reach the level of Roma's ten from last year or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon's from nine years ago.

Interesting note. Last year set a record in which 3 of the foreign film nominees had nominations in other categories.

This year, we match that record in the newly named International Feature category: Parasite, Pain and Glory, and Honeyland.

That would have to be a reflection of the growing international diversity of the Academy, right?
