In a year where it doesn't appear that there is a clear, VFX standout, a game-changer (similar to 2015), perhaps they'll go for The Shape of Water.
My guesses...
Blade Runner 2049
Dunkirk
The Shape of Water
Star Wars: The Last Jedi
War for the Planet of the Apes
History tells us that Dunkirk is probably going to be nominated although I haven't been reading much about it like I did with Nolan films of the past. And I know that Wonder Woman is an enormously popular hit, but it wasn't popular for its visual effects.
I've yet to watch Beauty and the Beast, so I can't say for sure what kind of accomplishment it is, but it would appear to be on deck. If Prometheus can get nominated, perhaps so can Alien: Covenant. Ghost in the Shell directed Rupert Sanders' previous film was Snow White and the Huntsman, so he has a track record in this category as well. And if the first Guardians of the Galaxy can get nominated, I'm sure the second one has a shot as well.
