You can't do two things in the same category, so I will just take you first one.Hustler wrote:Group 3A): Preserve Fight Club in Sound Effects Editing

Now we're cooking with gas. The game is finally moving like it's alive and the replacements/saves have mostly been brilliant.
Group 1 - Several things I'd like to do here, but I think I'll get rid of Samantha Morton, an actress I usually love, but not in the misfire that was Woody Allen's Sweet and Lowdown. I'll throw another bone to Franco Zeffirelli's under-appreciated Tea With Mussolini and replace her with the sublime Maggie Smith.
Group 2A - Preserve "Blame Canada" in Best Song.
2B - Replace The Matrix in Film Editing with The Talented Mr. Ripley.
Group 3A - The End of the Affair replaces Austin Powers in Make-up.
3B - The Sixth Sense replaces The Phantom Menace in Sound Effects Editing.

1. So much to do. My biggest dissapointment come nominations day was the utter collapse of The Talented Mr. Ripley. So I'll replace the admittedly brilliant Russell Crowe with the even better Matt Damon. Sorry The Original BJ.
2. A couple quick preservations even though I think they're safe: "Save Me" in best song and Being John Malkovich in original screenplay.
3. Add eXistenz to best sound editing. No other switch/preservation for me.

Best Adapted Screenplay is a strong lineup. The End of the Affair, Eyes Wide Shut, Fight Club, The Talented Mr. Ripley, and Toy Story 2. All very good films. Election isn't just a great movie, it's a great adaptation of a very funny book. Fight Club is a better adaptation of a better book, but I think both of these films are markedly higher in quality than The End of the Affair or The Talented Mr. Ripley. On the whole, this lineup is quite a bit stronger than the Academy's roster which featured a mutilated version of a sprawling book (The Cider House Rule) and a too reverential take on a decent serial (The Green Mile).

I think that Being John Malkovich is the second best film of 1999, behind Fight Club. I think American Beauty, Eyes Wide Shut, The Sixth Sense, and The Talented Mr. Ripley are all very good films, and certainly better than The Cider House Rules and The Green Mile. So on the sliding scale, it's not the end of the world.
What I don't understand is omitting Election in the category of Best Adapted Screenplay. That's unconscionable.
Man, we also snubbed Being John Malkovich in Best Picture!!!

1. I am terrified that Crowe or Farnsworth might lose their Best Actor bids, but Spacey is probably even more vulnerable. So I'll preserve him.
2a. Replace Topsy-Turvy in Original Screenplay with Pedro Almodóvar, All About My Mother.
2b. Gabriel Yared's score to The Talented Mr. Ripley is wonderful, but Thomas Newman's work on American Beauty is absolutely fantastic, some of the best work he's ever done. So I rescue American Beauty's score.
3a. Preserve The Talented Mr. Ripley in Best Costume Design.
3b. Preserve The Matrix in Best Sound.

According to the results page, American Beauty is still a nominee for Editing.FilmFan720 wrote:2B: American Beauty is already replaced...another something to replace?OscarGuy wrote:Group 2b: Fight Club replaces American Beauty in Editing
Group 3b: Add Galaxy Quest to Makeup
3B: No room to add to the category, but lots you can replace
And I could have sworn the Makeup category only had 3 nominations when I made my post. So, I'll just replace Bicentennial Man.
