I finally got to Match Point myself this weekend, and I'm more in line with Sonic's view of the film. I wouldn't call this so much a return to form for Woody as I'd call it a pleasing new direction. I'm a huge fan of his 70s classics (loved Annie Hall; thought Manhattan one of the most perfect film...

Clayburgh is having a comeback on Broadway this year. She was in an unsuccessful Richard Greenberg play with Richard Thomas in the fall (the tiitle escapes me). And she's now in previews with a revival of Barefoot In The Park playing -- brace yourselves -- the Mildred Natwick role. Even worse -- To...

I just saw this post for the first time, Sonic, and I want to heartily second what you say. The whole idea behind the Official Review thread was to leave space for comment on films that obviously didn't rate threads of their own, but that maybe rated a few words in passing. (My possibly-faulty memo...

I just had to post this, re: Bush's State of the Union address. Flipping through news channel and some Aryan Fox F ucker had this to say: "Bill Clinton famously rewrote chunks of his State of the Union address on the way in his limousine. We are being told that this will not be the case tonigh...

I can't say I hated it, but I thought it was mediocre at best (and dismally shot -- my recollection from the one time I saw it, in January '77, was that some cuts were extremely jarring and seemingly mismatched). Rocky was heavily pushed as "antidote" to the feel-bad movies that dominated...

Magilla, I think you leave out that A Man For All Seasons was the lifeline for all those older Academy-ites who weren't happy about a "dirty" movie winning. Woolf was the leader all year, until Seasons opened, and some people (including critics) leaped on it with unabashed relief (recall ...

For the most part, my wife and I hoot when a celeb marriage breaks up. But I find this genuinely sad. I knew Chad very glancingly when he lived in NY, and he was a truly nice guy; I've never seen any reason to think Hillary was any different.

Okay...this a very good movie: impeccably directed (no surprise, given the pedigree), splendidly acted all around, full of well-written scenes (though I did have a few story problems, which I'll get to in a bit), and a moving overall human-condition arc. But (you could feel a "but" coming...

I was at the Loews 68th in NY to see Syriana; the 2:30 show of Brokeback was sold out before 2:10. I can tell you from long experience: afternoon shows are NEVER sold out, even on opening day. (Two evening shows were already listed as sold out, too) This thing, at least in big cities, is going to t...

I don't know why, but Brokeback Mountain is one of the first (the first?) movies that I've ever been completely sick of before it even opened. Really, dws -- your first? The modern method, of opening serious films at festivals many months before public exhibition, has made this a chronic problem fo...

Since the film is now at something of a kudos-peak, maybe it’s time for me to acknowledge: I wasn’t all that wild about The Squid and the Whale. I enjoyed it substantially more than Kicking and Screaming (which I almost actively disliked), and it grew on me some as it went along. But I had two fair...

Damien, I went through the same progression with you on Bound for Glory in late '76 -- first thinking it might be the year's masterpiece (I seem to recall an early Variety review being a rave), then being disappointed in the "great-looking but dramatically inert" preponderance of reviews ...

It got no better when 10PM hit. I went to CNN, and golden boy Anderson Cooper was leading with a study of divorce. Didn't elections used to be important news?

Anyway, an excellent night for our side...pending the results from the left coast.

Well, for once I'll be the grouchiest about a movie: I think you're all being WAY too kind about North Country. I thought it was, for most of its running time, a complete mediocrity -- Lifetime on the big screen. Then, in the last 20 minutes or so, I thought it turned totally godawful. The end titl...
