Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

It seems Battle of the Sexes has no chance for a nomination, Darkest Hour is a somewhat well-received Drama that'll receive a BP Nom to even further benefit Oldman, and I'm still a bit iffy on Lady Bird's Chances to get in. That just leaves Three Billboards and The Florida Project. And while Three B...

Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

Here's a neat analysis I've heard; Every BP winner after The Departed had a screening at either Cannes, Venice or Telluride. And also had a US release before December. If the coincidental trend doesn't stop, one of these film could win Best Picture: https://image.tmdb.org/t/p/w92/pD2Ttx8SCKHfA8H1cUC...

Anyone else a bit nervous about how safe Oldman's win feels right now?

Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

SHIT! I meant to say Metcalf   Appy-polly loggies

Yeah, she's been getting loads of buzz, might be even stronger than Ronan. I'm still wondering If A24 can balance both TFP and LB.

Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

The current race for BP seems rather open. Most people have (for whatever reason) already concluded what'll win: Oldman, Hawkins, Dafoe, del Toro or Nolan, (with Supporting Actress still said to be rather debatable; Leo, Chau, Metcalf.) And strangely enough, I'm somewhat on the same page, (except fo...

Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

Well that explains a lot, I was wondering what was going on with Close's Film. And I also concur that It was wise to bump it up, this leading actress category seems like It's going to be a bloodbath.

Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

And If the AMPAS are still burnt out on Hanks, then there's still a chance Washington gets in, (if Gyllenhaal doesn't make it.)

Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

Our whole point is, which you utterly fail to grasp, is that at this point in the game, claiming to know anything with certainty is a fool's errand. Washington's film may have gotten a mixed reaction, but Washington is one of those actors who could get nominated for reading the phone book (kinda li...

Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

Who knew that Chocolat would go from being a mediocrely reviewed film to a Best Picture nominee. Sometimes, thinking we know everything is worse than thinking we no nothing. Neato. That was Miramax; 17 years ago Mirmax we're talking about. Plus, there wasn't a whole lot of strong contenders for BP ...

Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

Yeah -- like we all knew La La Land had best picture nailed in September. Why does this have anything to do with this year's Best Actor race? So you're telling me It doesn't matter that 'Roman J. Israel, Esq.' received very harsh mixed reviews at TIFF, and that It'll somehow garner raves when It's ...

Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

Garfield's film is already getting mega-panned as a cold, and lifeless 'Theory of Everything', (check out TIFF reviews.) And 'Roman J. Israel, Esq.' is getting mixed/negative reviews, while mostly praising Washington. Plus, If there's no-one else but Oldman, Chalamet, Day-Lewis, and Hanks; I can see...

Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

I suppose we should wait until BFI LFF and NYFF for any reassurance, but IS CRANSTON LEADING OR SUPPORTING? This category is getting pretty tight; with Garfield out of the race, and Denzel potentially flopping. Gyllenhaal seems like a safe bet for a nom; with the raves his film and his performance h...

Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

Reviews for 'Roman J. Israel, Esq' so far have been slightly positive/mixed, whilst praising Washington's performance. This might have convinced me to boot Washington back down again. I always knew his reputation alone wouldn't result in an Oscar Nomination. Denzel Washington for 'Roman Israel, Esq'...
