It's interesting because I actually think that the other stories are superflous to the Japanese one (which I believe embodies the whole theme of what Babel is all about.) I've said it before (to much ridicule) and I'll say it again...I think Rinko will win the Best Supporting Actress award in a sho...

For statistics buffs: Scorsese and Eastwood each have three Best Director nominations this decade--and the '00s still have three years left. No director achieved three nominations during the '80s or '90s. Fosse and F. Coppola each had three in the '70s; no one did in the '60s. Before that, however,...

The ENORMOUS tidal wave of hype months and months before the movie even opened killed it: what could have been a halfway solid musical instead became another bloated Oscar-greedy and empty spectacle. It's hard to imagine that the makers of, say, Bridge on the River Kwai or Ben-Hur or My Fair Lady d...

!I think Murphy is technically the front-runner, but a weak one, which is dangerous -- sometimes such candidates pull through; other times they're Winona Ryder/Klaus Maria Brandauer-ed. With Dreamgirls obviously weaker than imagined, and Wahlberg now carrying all the Departed actor-momentum, I thin...

Oh, and I wonder: did the Dreamgirls full-court press simply alienate voters? Even my mother -- who doesn't remotely follow this stuff -- said she was tired of being told it was the best movie of the year. I wonder if members who even liked it, assuming its nomination was a done deal, nominated fil...

I, like others, have to write this on the run: A few thoughts: These noms speak to the power of the early critics' precursors. The LAFCC and NBR awards to Letters were not forgotten, nor was LA's nod to Greengrass, although I think United 93 was always a New York vs. L.A. thing. No Best Picture fie...

Of all of the categories in this decade (or maybe any decade), these choices are by far the least objectionable over all. There's nobody here whose choice I would violently oppose. Would I have voted for all of them? No. I would not have voted for Palance (Lerner), Hackman (more of a strategic choi...

One more thing: Sideways is an obvious example of an off-center indie comedy that did make it on. But it had more heavy artillery in terms of precursors behind it than those other comedies I mention. And its nominations were disappointing, you recall. Not only the Giamatti miss, but no nods in the ...

All this venom against Little Miss Sunshine is just plain silly, and for naught. It will likely be nominated, but it's not going to win. Sorry, Magilla, I didn't mean to spew venom. Let me try to put it more objectively: I really do think that Little Miss Sunshine is this year's Truman Show, Being ...

I've been hanging back from commenting a lot on this year's race, partly because I hadn't caught up on the major BP contenders, partly because I still haven't gotten over the Crash-tastrophe, and partly because it has taken me a while to get a take on this year's race--if I or others have. I've now...

The tradition is the previous years' Best Director presents the current year's Best Director prize if he's not nominated. Since Ang Lee won't be nominated, I figure he'll be the presenter. We'll just have to keep an eye out for the presenters announcements that'll be coming starting in about a week...
