Re: Oscar Predictions Contest

Let's have some fun, then. What an unpredictable year this is! It seems some records will be broken no matter what happens. There we go. BEST PICTURE: Boyhood Runner-up: Birdman BEST DIRECTING: Richard Linklater Runner-up: Alejandro G. Iñárritu BEST LEADING ACTOR: Eddie Redmayne Runner-up: Michael K...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Music Score

This is definitely between Budapest, The Imitation Game and The Theory of Everything. If Hans Zimmer didn't win in 2010 for Inception, Interstellar has no chance for his effective but invasive organ. And Mr. Turner is a pleasant surprise and a very worthy nominee whose score fits perfectly with the ...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Editing

No disrespect meant, but I've decided that any opinion that begins with the phrase "if Boyhood hadn't been shot over 12 years..." is one I can't take seriously. It reminds me a bit of the oft-heard "if Brokeback Mountain had been about a man and a woman..." arguments. Such a sta...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Editing

If Boyhood wouldn't have been shot in 12 years, there's no way it would be a film editing nominee. I think its actual merit is focused on a truly constant and quiet pace, and there aren't really ups and downs during almost three hours, which is difficult to achieve indeed, specially considering thos...

Re: BAFTA winners

So, the acting categories all settled. Only Keaton could prevail if the Academy follows the Guilds wave rewarding Birdman, and now the question is which wave will take the Academy? The guilds? The precursors and Boyhood wins? Is there any other alternative? In spite of the acting categories, this is...

Re: DGA Winner

Some quick thoughts. Considering split, I just can't see a three year in a row split Picture/Director. It didn't even happen in the 30's. Film editing doesn't matter. Birdman is not that kind of movie which needs that category. It can win without it. Who cares about Ordinary people anymore? It's ind...

Re: ACE Eddie Awards

I hadn't thought it that way till you wrote it. You're right, Mister Tee. For a moment I kind of confussed critics with guilds. This is almost everything the same all the time. At last the race is turning out to be interesting, yes.

Re: ACE Eddie Awards

Just another guild supporting Boyhood. Is it REALLY the best dramatic edited film of the year? I just don't get it. There are more interesting options in this category. If they want to reward that they ordered all that 12 years material, OK. Don't worry for Birdman, I'll keep saying is not that kind...

Re: Evaluating the nominees

I'm sorry. I've had to post it like this due to that 403 error nobody understands. Thank you for your very interesting points, Uri. I'll put mine now and this will be the first time on this board for me to do so, after having seen all this year's nominated stuff. I'll also use your way of rating. It...

Re: Evaluating the nominees

BEST PICTURE Birdman - B+. A truly delightful experience. Intelligent, entertaining, cynical, sad and kind of visionary. The most organized chaos I've ever seen in a long time. A joy of a movie and clearly the best of this nine. The imitation game - B. Not close to an embarrasment, nor very good. Ef...

Re: Evaluating the nominees

BEST LEADING ACTOR Benedict Cumberbatch - B+. A great actor in a great, beautiful, expert and nuanced performance that dives indeed deeper in what he's given. Another triumph for his career. Michael Keaton - B. He delivers his best way possible with that material. Truly succesful. And he knows he is...

Re: Evaluating the nominees

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR Edward Norton. B. It could be him just playing himself, but for God's sake what a good performance! J. K. Simmons. B. A more than effective cliche. He is smart enough, and his choices are quite right. Mark Ruffalo. B. A different and interesting actor with some good things to s...

Re: PGA Winner

I'm with Tripp. It's been more than 30 years (Ordinary People in 1980) since a film that wasn't nominated for editing won Best Picture. Even films that won without a director nomination (Argo and Driving Miss Daisy for example) had editing nominations. So now it's the time for breaking that record....
