Re: Best Supporting Actor 2014

Not a weak line-up, but a not very exciting one. The Judge is a dreadful film, and Robert Duvall is a great actor, but this citation is quite frustrating. Next. The second time I watched Boyhood I appreciated Ethan Hawke's performance better. Maybe it's not an award-worthy turn, but he is charming, ...

Re: Best Screenplay 2014

At least in Original we have something to make consideration of. First to go is Nightcrawler, a movie I simply don't get. If new "cult movies" in America are going to be like this one, I give up. Drive was much better, just for make a comparison. And this script is a tiresome service to Ja...

Best Screenplay 2014

I have some kind of emergency for these polls, but if it's too soon, delete it and you'll be wiser than me for knowing when to start with them.

Re: Best Actor

There was no doubt in my mind that Redmayne would finally win this. When has an actor won an Academy Award for playing an actor who is such self-conscious of himself and of what means being an actor? Only Ronald Colman and Jean Dujardin come to my mind as leading actor winners for playing one. I pre...

We all know what's gonna happen here, but at least they deserve our quick and final thoughts. Meryl Streep's 19th nomination is mind-blowing, but anything in the world could make her winning a fourth Oscar for this (refreshing) effort, but isn't it nice seeing her almost every year since 1978? Keira...

Re: Evaluating the nominees

Gene Hackman? Good thought processes on this last (?) "brutally honest Oscar ballot": http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/brutally-honest-oscar-ballot-no-775783 I know who it is. It's not Gene Hackman. The intro is very carefully and amusingly laid out. The Golden Globe winning and BAFT...

Re: Categories One-By-One: Actor

Insightful interview with Academy voter who doesn't vote for actors in movies he doesn't like. He didn't get Birdman. Amazing. Seals it for me for Redmayne. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/brutally-honest-oscar-ballot-no-773848 For heaven's sake. I bet Hollywood Reporter talks to the most ra...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Picture/Director

[quote="OscarGuy] I cannot recall anything in the history of the Oscars that was oddball as Birdman winning Best Picture. [\quote] That's absolutely true, but at least when I think of Birdman winning, All about Eve is the example that comes to my mind as one winner that could resemble Iñárritu'...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Picture/Director

I think Innaritu's got Director. The last time a nominated DGA winner didn't also win the Oscar for his/her work was 12 years ago. Likely result with no mitigating factors. I'm conflicted about picture. But, I'm going with the positive, uplifting Boyhood over the weird Birdman. More accessible and ...

Re: Categories One-By-One: Actor

My instinct keeps saying me Eddie Redmayne over and over again. What an easy choice for an average Academy member. I will be very surprised and very pleased if he doesn't win. I don't think Birdman MUST win along with Keaton, it'd make perfect sense Birdman being the winner with directing, screenpla...

Meryl Streep's worst nominated performance

I haven't seen all Meryl's nominated performances yet, so I create this poll in order to know your thoughts about her way through the Oscars, breaking her record again this year with 19 citations. For sure she's one of the greatest actresses ever, but that doesn't mean 19 performances for the ages. ...

Re: Individual Awards for Best Picture Nominees

Welcome, Kellens101! Considering your request, more or less these would be my own delivery: Birdman: Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actor, Original Screenplay, Cinematography and Sound Mixing. The Imitation Game: Best Leading Actor and Adapted Screenplay (I think this is the less bad script of t...

Categories One-By-One: Supporting Actor

6 days left to the Oscars, and I have the urge for the acting categories. None of the five men nominated here are bad or bland, but this is a weak category in my opinion, and you know it's weak because of the lack of real competition (not lack of good performances), but I presume it was also a weak ...
