Re: PGA Nominations

That could be it. Will that clinch BP from the Academy, which has been youngening (not a word) in recent years?

Re: PGA Nominations

If it indeed happens, The Shape of Water’s win will be the first in years and years I just don’t ‘get.’ At all. I liked it well enough, especially Hawkins, Jenkins and Desplat’s score, but the themes are all well-traveled. Military = bad, tolerance and being different = good. (Audiences seem to feel...

Re: Nominations Landscape -- Part 1: Best Picture

WALL-E had won LA Critics, Chicago Critics, Boston Critics, and Online Critics awards for Best Picture. It was nominated at the Broadcast Critics and it was top ten at the National Board of Review. These are not inconsequential achievements. I'd say it was far more acclaimed than The Dark Knight AM...

Re: Nominations Landscape -- Part 1: Best Picture

That was also the year of the WALL-E snub. Yeah, Dark Knight gets a lot of the attention, but WALL-E was also a major snub that morning when many thought it would get nominated and the usual chorus of "they ignore animated films" built up. WALL-E had great reviews and strong box office (a...

Are the Olympics extending the voting period?
The Dark Knight, one of the two films that helped usher in the five-plus fields
What’s the other one? TDK seems to get all the credit for that.

Re: BAFTA Nominations & Predictions

SPOILERS He beats up the ad exec...that's a pretty shitty thing to do. It is, but the one time we see his police brutality in action, it's on a white male with higher socioeconomic status. (He's not an ad exec like Don Draper, but he has a desk job in a rural town.) Not that that makes it OK, but i...

Re: BAFTA Nominations & Predictions

Well, as we saw with the attacks on ZERO DARK THIRTY and THE WOLF OF WALL STREET, depicting despicable behavior without explicitly attacking it means your movie is endorsing that behavior. In fact 3BB gives Rockwell something of a redemptive hero arc (especially the DNA scene), and McDonagh ...

Re: Golden Globe Reactions

And Oprah Winfrey won the CBDeMille award because it's for both film AND television and there's no doubt that she has contributed to both, most especially television, having hosted the Oprah Winfrey Show for 25 years and 719 episodes. She has 35 TV credits as a producer, 5 movie credits as producer...

Re: SAG Nominations and Predictions

I'm not sure what Jada Pinkett Smith is going to say today, as her girl Tiffany was left off again -- along with Octavia Spencer -- but, at the same time, Mudbound got the top category, Mary J. Blige once again turned up It’s an odd situation: Yes, they nominated a black actress, which is good, but...

Re: Golden Globes

I’ll take Jada Pinkett more seriously when she doesn’t have a personal connection to the film passed over. As for Get Out, Jordan Peele made his name in comedy and the Lil Rey Howery character gets plenty of laughs. It’s not the craziest thing in the world to put in the comedy category. It seems tha...

Re: SAG Nominations and Predictions

Yay, no Streep! SAG voters decided to make all 5 slots available this year. :D I guess that’s it for Haddish. Blige was seemingly nominated in her place. I still couldn’t be less interested in seeing Mudbound. Carell has to be the biggest surprise. I thought he was fine but didn’t see this com...

Peele, since Get Out is likely to win its category.
