Re: Golden Globe Awards

The usual mixture of the expected and the totally random (John C. Reilly?). Of course Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody did well with the HFPA. Ethan Hawke and Sam Elliott will still be SAG- and Oscar-nominated. I really hope Rosamund Pike will replace Melissa McCarthy when those are announced...

Re: The Host of the 91st Academy Awards Is....

Max, I was meaning that since Haddish was an Oscar contender FOR Girls Trip that they would have be at least modestly cognizant of her. Ah, my mistake! Yes, winning that NYFCC award certainly must have introduced her to the UAADB crowd. I was imagining someone who knew of her but not Kevin Hart thr...

Re: The Host of the 91st Academy Awards Is....

It's like listening to a bunch of old women at the beauty parlor as they discuss that young whipper snapper Brad Pitt they've never heard of. Thanks for saying it first. I really can't believe people here haven't heard of Kevin Hart. Oscar watchers are movie watchers first, and he is in a lot of mo...

Jeez. "Lest we get bad press and an outcry on social media for 'snubbing' Roma, here's a special award." The race is over, I guess.

Re: New York Film Critics Circle Awards

I think you're dismissing young Hollywood too much. This is the group that awarded Best Picture to Moonlight over La La Land. I don't see the connection. Moonlight was something new: a new story, new voice and mostly new faces. I don't want to run this into the ground, but Glenn Close is your mom's...

You forgot to forget about Janet McTeer’s nomination. Her second!

Re: New York Film Critics Circle Awards

When was the last time the Academy used Best Actress as a way to honor someone who was "due?" I suppose Julianne Moore for Still Alice. Then again, she had the incredible good fortune of being nominated in not just the weakest Best Actress lineup of the decade but maybe the weakest acting...

Re: New York Film Critics Circle Awards

I was looking forward to this awards season. I don’t want it to be over already because Cuaron had the remarkable good fortune of releasing Roma in 2018 :/ Personally, I think it’s time to start considering that just because Glenn Close is due online doesn’t mean it matters in the real world. I’m we...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Original Song

I'll never forget the Best Original Song debacle two years ago. Lady Gaga performs "Til It Happens to You" and everyone watching is transfixed. It's a powerful moment. Of course she'll win. Then the presenters come out and the Oscar goes to that Sam Smith abortion from Spectre. (He then ha...

Re: DGA Nominations

Well, that's dispiriting. I thought The Shape of Water was fine but hardly exceptional; its front-runner status baffles me. I'd prefer any of the four other director nominees, but this 'race' seems anything but. :|

Re: It's Trivia Time

Considering the Academy does not credit the producer specifically with the nomination or the award That is not true. If the best picture award weren't for producers, the Academy wouldn't have set a limit, post- Shakespeare in Love , on how many producers could be nominated for one film. If you go t...

Re: London Film Critics Circle Awards

Paddington 2 is a massive critical hit: 88 on metacritic, comparable to most of the BP nominees, and 100% on RT. (Unlike Lady Bird, it's not going to have its score knocked down by some sexist loser looking to make a name for himself. ) It shouldn't be confused with children's fare like Ice A...
