Aside from Black and White movies that had color frames or segments: The Picture of Dorian Gray, Portrait of Jennie, The Solid Gold Cadillac, etc., the first film I recall that used color within a Black and White frame was Rumble Fish (1983)

Agree with you Magilla. I've seen and have been moved my many so-called works of art, but can't tell you how many times I've watched Out of the Past, Kiss Me Deadly and Laura . Certainly once a year for each. Scorsese has said The Departed was his 'B' movie, and like so many of that kind, it is emi...

That world premier song was actually Deborah's Theme from Once Upon a Time in America; which also happens to be my favorite composition of his.

"Then topsy turvy. Me topsy, them turvy." One of my favorite old Arkin lines. How apropos. Glad he got his Oscar.

Here's a little more detailed explanation (but still a head scratcher) So how does this Oscar nomination process work? Glad you asked. By Steve Pond, The Envelope January 7, 2006 Attention Oscar voters: You should have received your nominating ballot by now; if not, it'll be in your mailbox any day...

San Francisco also awarded Brick for original screenplay. Is it eligible for Academy Awards? Has a list of eligible films been posted anywhere yet? Thanks.

Here's a few behind the scenes anecdotes from The Screengrap via MCN: ANECDOTE 1: Best Picture wound up being the most contentious category. Most winners are decided on the second or third ballot; a handful require four. In this case, however, the fourth ballot was a tie between UNITED 93 and THE Q...

My first introduction to Jack Palance was, as a 7 yr. old, seeing The Silver Chalice in the movies. Forget Paul Newman and Pier Angeli, it was Jack Palance and Virginia Mayo that left the impression. With their cat-like eyes, they made quite the pair. Frankly, his looks scared the hell out of me ba...

I felt about the same. Hollywoodland was not a bad watch, but lets face it, George Reeves's story just isn't that interesting. I was a kid when The Adventures of Superman was on, and an avid watcher, but after the shock of his suicide, he soon faded from memory. I do have a question. The film depic...

Couldn't find it mentioned, but the little seen film Wanda, written and directed by Barbara Loden is being released on DVD today. It won a few awards back in 1970 when it came out. I haven't seen it. Magilla, Tee, Damien? Did any of you see it?

And while no actress has accomplished it (Hepburn skipped the 70s, and Streep will have to be nominated next decade for 5 in a row), the only one eligible this decade for 5 consecutive is Vanessa Redgrave. A long shot, but maybe the movie she is making with Peter O'Toole will have some potential.

Back in 2001 I thought that Gene Hackman would be the first since Olivier to receive an acting nomination 5 decades in a row when he was a good bet for The Royal Tenenbaums, but that didn't happen. The next year both Nicholson and Caine made it.

Yeah, Bogdanovich had his rose-colored glasses on when he wrote that article (and I must have had them on when I read it). Still when I think back to the days of exploring the sixth balcony of the Brooklyn Paramount Theater I recall how the sceen looked like a postage stamp and not the clientele th...
