Well, let's see. We could go with:
Kate Dickie - Red Road
Carice van Houten - Black Book
Keri Russell - Waitress
Tabu - The Namesake
Sigourney Weaver - Snow Cake

Nice work by all, but I'll take predictible

I think this will be another year (four in a row) when the Globes fail to predict the Oscar Best Picture. And when you look at those four Best Pictures: The Aviator, Brokeback Mountain, Babel, Atonement and compare with the Academy: Million Dollar Baby, Crash, The Departed and for argument's sake N...

Let's not forget that movie sets have been enhanced and sometimes completely replaced by matte paintings to for nearly 100 years. From changing Selznick's studio edifice to Tara in Gone With the Wind to Moses presenting Ramses with his new city in The Ten Commandments to the amazing recreation of t...

Definitely agree that Zodiac was overlooked. The attention to detail was amazing, down to the basketball backboards in the school yard. Even if much of it was accomplished digitally, it was beautiful work.

There's something very old-fashioned British about James McAvoy's screen presence. I can easily see him in John Mills's Pip role in Great Expectations or Trevor Howard's Doctor Harvey in Brief Encounter.

Sorry OG, I didn't word my question clearly enough. I realize that all members vote for Best Picture. What surprised me was the large number that are not part of a branch that has a nominated category (editors, sound, music etc.). Who are members at large? Clerical support and other office staffers?

Am I correct in saying that out of the 5829 AMPAS members, over one quarter, 1517, can only vote for nominations in the Best Picture Category? They are 459 Producers, 440 Executives, 369 Public Relations and 254 Members at Large. I guess I was suprised that outside of Actors, the other branches tha...

I agree, Sabin. I really enjoyed the movie, but it did seem that the words coming out of her mouth were often a bit too clever for her 16 yr. old character. I remember feeling the same way when I first saw Richard Dreyfuss in The Goodbye Girl (does anybody really talk like that?). Then again, he di...

By the way, since the SAG nominations Ellen Page has won Best Actress from the following (granted not heavy hitters) Critics Groups:
Austin
Detroit
Florida
Utah
Oklahoma
St. Louis Gateway

I wonder if she, and not Marion Cotillard, will be the major competition for Julie Christie.

What a difficult year for predicting Best Picture nominees. Other than No Country for Old Men and possibly Juno, the other candidates seem to come and go en masse. Maybe the other guilds will narrow it down. Right now the last three slots look like a fight among: Michael Clayton, Into the Wild, Ato...

If BFCS and Hollywood Foreign Press bail on Atonement and Sweeney Todd (which I don't think they'll do) those films are in big trouble. I wonder if Michael Clayton will be the competition now. Chicago seems to love it - 6 Nominations in their strongest categories, and a double nod for Gilroy
