Re: NY Critics winners
Well, I'm glad to hear that Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is on your list of favorite films or best films, because it was my favorite and the best American film released last year. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I wasn't here enough last year to see what you guys thought about it. Scott Pilgrim is on...

Re: Personal Oscar Predictions
I don't think the novels are particularly special (I think the first one is the best, but even there not in a transcending-genre way), but if I have any excitement about this version it's that a true filmmaker is at the helm. When I watched the first trailer for the Fincher version, I was aware of ...

1: "Hey, neighbor!" 2: "...Hey, Bill... what's up?" 1: "Oh, nothing. Just seeing what you were up to. Working on your car, I see." 2: "...Yea." 1: "Kickin' jams you got playing. Is this a new CD?" 2: "It's my iPod..." 1: "Cool, cool. W...

Re: Personal Oscar Predictions
Interesting. I've gotten those same vibes without talking to publiscists. The wild card is still Extremely Close and Incredibly Loud You've got it backwards: it's Extremely LOUD and Incredibly CLOSE. I'm prepared to be underwhelmed considering I found the novel way too precious, but you never know....

Re: NY Critics winners
I don't love any of those films. Who cares about edgy? That's just a word. Arty is just as meaningful as edgy. I think we're putting too much stock on these words. Edgy and artsy can be meaningful to some, but it's not the right descriptor here and it's certainly based on the perspective of the vie...

Re: Personal Oscar Predictions
I'm not seeing a nod for Rooney Mara. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is not only redunant, it's probably going to end up a foolish waste of money for Warner Bros., who thanks to the critical/box office failure of J. Edgar and Tattoo, will have to campaign hard for Extremely close if they want to b...

Re: NY Critics winners (in progress)
Frankly, from description, as I have no idea when The Artist will begin its run where I live, The Artist is edgy. How many folks are going to go watch it without the nudge of awards and award nominations? The fact that it is a silent film will turn most folks off. I don't see how this in any way ma...

Re: Personal Oscar Predictions
And Fox is pushing for a "Best Supporting Actor" nomination for Andy Serkis in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Honestly, if he didn't get a nod for Gollum in Lord of the Rings or King Kong in, well, you know - then I don't see this happening.

Re: NY Critics winners (in progress)
Maybe the NYFCC should make a point of awarding . . . Best Animated Film only as warranted. Are there worthy awardees each year? I've been saying that about the Academy for years. In my predictions, for runner up I had: No award given this year. I'm glad this group recognized the absurdity of this ...

Re: 2012: Spielberg's Lincoln
Neeson dropped out because he felt he was too old to play the part. He is only a few years older than Lincoln was when he died but the film is supposed to document his rise to politics as well as the Civil War. Daniel Day-Lewis is a couple years younger than Lincoln before death. He certainly does l...
