Re: Kate Smith

one of the most iconic singers of 20th Century music. One of the most iconic singers of 20th Century AMERICAN music. Unlike many other American singers, from Bessie Smith to Beyonce, from Al Johnson to Eminem, who , indeed, became international icons, her appeal never really transcended the US and ...

Re: Best Actress 2018

This was a tough year to find five nominees. Why? The Favourite alone offered you three equally - quality as well as quantity wise - valid candidates for best lead actress of the year. I don't have a newly found perspective I didn't have a month ago, when I evaluated the nominees - Colman and espec...

It's about having at least one proper result which was unexpected or not certain. Very little to ask for - and yet these outcomes are rarer and rarer.

Re: 91st Oscars: Best Directing

I suspect different countries have different rules. As The Barbarian Invasions was Canada's only win it's probably on display at the National Film Board of Canada in Montreal. You're probably right - I'm sure that in France - the birthplace of the Auteur Theory - the notion that a film - and the aw...

Re: 91st Oscars: Ceremony

But I’d already had my adrenaline shot for the evening, and nothing could take it away. I'm afraid this is all we can hope for now - an occasional - and rare - Casey-Affleck-moment of pure satisfaction to slip through. Cuaron’s win here adds directing to the categories won by foreign-language film ...

Malek is of Coptic heritage. There is a debate whether the Copts are Arabs or not.

OscarGuy wrote:Denys Arcand does not have the Oscar for The Barbarian Invasions in his possession, so it's definitely not the director's to keep.
But is that Oscar in in the possession of the producer of the film, or is it held in some dark, cobwebby government dungeon?

Re: Trivia

Olivia Colman is the third actor who had Meryl Streep as an onscreen mother to go on and win an Oscar, following Rene Zellweger and Leonardo Dicaprio. I wonder if that's kind of a record? Katharine Hepburn played the mother of Jason Robards, Anthony Hopkins and Jane Fonda, but only the first two won...

Still, the director gets to keep it. Moshe Mizrahi had the Oscar France supposedly won for Madam Rosa in his apartment in Tel Aviv.

Re: Trivia

17 days - that's what makes this year only the fourth time since the establishment of the supporting categories that both winning actresses are older that both winning actors - Ali is 17 days younger than Colman. It happened before in 1955 (Mangani and Van Fleet vs. Borgnine and Lemmon), 1978 (Smith...

Re: Trivia

Mahershala Ali is the first actor in 26 years, and the fifth over all, to win twice for performances featured in best picture winners. He joins Marlon Brando, Dustin Hoffman, Jack Nicholson and Gene Hackman in this very respectable club. He is the first "person of color", i.e. black, actor...

Re: 91st Oscars: Actress

She was nominated the year Peter O'Toole lost for the seventh time. She was nominated the year Geraldine Page lost for the seventh time. I guess Close would have a much better chance at winning this year had she not been nominated.

Re: R.I.P. Stanley Donen

I last watched this in 2012 and here are my notes on it: The Grass is Greener (Stanley Donen, 1960) 5/10 Chic drawing room (literally) comedy with four huge stars. Kerr, married to Grant, falls in ''love'' with visiting tourist Mitchum. Simmons is the best friend who adds to the confusion. Extremel...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Best Picture

I remember reading that on one of the flights back to the US from Frances Spike Lee was looking pretty despondent and Sally Field who was a member of the jury went up to him and rubbed his shoulder and said 'I tried, I really tried'. She does have a very certain way with words, very certain, our Sa...

At the other end of the spectrum, though, he made some of the most awful films all time. Kiss Them for Me , Once More, with Feeling , Surprise Package , The Grass Is Greener , Staircase , The Little Prince , Lucky Lady and Blame It on Rio are virtually unwatchable. Aren't you a little harsh with Th...
