You missed the very smelly Hairspray with 93% on the tomatometer. ( sorry I keep ragging this film--I just found it so bloody annoying!) BUT I lost my faith i rottentomatoes.com -- if I ever had it. Music and Lyrics, a perfectly wonderful little musical film rated 64% for Gawd's sakes. Edited By ca...

I quite agree re Ray Wise. A short, but indelible performance.

It might be possible for Langella (always a very fine performer) to win back-to-back Oscars--next year for Frost/Nixon. I don't see the comparison with Gillian Anderson: Langella, after all, won the Tony this year for his performance as Nixon, so he is a little more in the public eye. I would be ve...

Delighted for you Precious. I believe that Howard was an embarrassment to many of us in the English-speaking Commonwealth because of his toadying to Bush. Bush needs a strong ally in that part of the world. Thus, Australians are regarded by the Americans as their close cousins and close friends. Ca...

While the Australian achievement is noteworthy, it's not all that surprising. The surprising trend was that pro-U.S. Sarkozy won the French election. I would consider it extremely surprising, considering the number of terms he was PM. He may even lose his own constituency seat. It is another indica...

I am most surprised by the fact that no one has commented on PM Howard's defeat in Australia. Kevin Rudd, the PM-elect, has vowed to withdraw Australian troops from Iraq, forthwith. Ordinarily I would think this omission is one of American navel-gazing, but not on this board, where the posters are ...

Philip: 1) I taught high school. Not cool. But do not remember my own kids ever wearing them. My son graduated in 1984.
2) US styles are ahead of Canadians.
At any rate. You did not see them in 1969, which was my point.

A new one. I have been brooding about this all week. First of all, couldn't stand Hairspray and see no reason for it to be so highly rated. But the director went out of his way to make this a 1969 feeling--the cars, the clothes, the dances, etc. Why the hell then does he muck it up right at the outs...
