I'm more of a CD buyer, but I've got a lot of DVD's this year. Mostly TV ones. Since January, then: Lost In Translation The Incredibles Sideways Napoleon Dynamite Collateral 24 - Seasons Two, Three, Four Six Feet Under - Season Three, Four Chappelle's Show - Season Two Sin City (the crap version, I...

You get what you'd expect from 40-Year Old Virgin. The title says it all, the poster is beguilingly sweet, and the story itself is played out well. I was apprehensive a few weeks before it came out, but I still think it's extremely amusing and laugh-out-loud funny in several scenes, much more than ...

Capote: **** This movie was easily one of the best movies I've seen this year, just an amazing performance from Hoffman, truly awe-inspiring and a blueprint for future biopic actors. The whole movie was engrossing and sublime, and I had a great time. Even my girlfriend, who was apprehensive, though...

Just got back from Capote, and some idiot laughed out loud after the Brokeback Mountain trailer. How ridiculous. Of course, he was alone in that endeavor, I think he was just trying to hide his own burgeoning homosexuality.

Isn't Sorvino related to someone famous which opened the door for her? I still remember when Paquin won and stood at the stage hyperventilating and smiling. I think I was her age and though "that should be me". Maybe if she wins another one really late in her life she'll break a record of...

I went with Tommy Lee Jones because of the competition he breezed by for a commanding, but hardly Oscar-worthy performance. Gooding Jr. was second for a performance I can't remember outside "show me the money". Kline over Phoenix was flabbergasting in retrospect, even though I piss myself...

Chronicles of Narnia: *** At times spectacular, most often alright, this anticipated big-screen version of C.S. Lewis' classic children's tale has been done quite well, all the money is on the screen. I thought Tilda Swinton made an appropriate Galadriel-esque Witch, but her acting was spotty at ti...

The press of Brokeback in my city (Calgary) has been pretty wild. I have seen several articles in both major papers in the past couple of weeks, and especially lately with the precursors and Golden Globes. Of course, very few explicitly mention its a gay love story, preferring to trumpet the fact i...

Thanks dan. I'm not arguing against the gay aspect of it (since that IS the most prevalent thing about the movie), but after thinking, my fears are of characters that are caricatures of gay males. Specifically, I'm thinking Nathan Lane and Hank Azaria in Birdcage. Entertaining as they are (meant to...

That is my single fear about this movie, and the thing that could doom it: an emphasis on it being a GAY love story. I'm just curious, how are you defining a film as a GAY love story? I wish I could give an eloquent response, but I would say: if they rub it in our faces. I'm a little tongue-tied fo...

So I'm curious as to what straight men will think about this movie. filmgabber, you are pathologically preoccupied with straight men. :;): I can relate. If it's played as a love story, then it could be excellent. If they play it as a GAY love story, then no, it won't work... No one walk out of Tita...

I've been with my girlfriend for over four years now, and at worst I'm distantly bi-curious, and I've been extremely excited to see this movie for a long time. I have no idea why: I haven't read the novella, I'm not particularly interested in seeing Jake and Heath acting out their characters' emoti...

With Friday box office estimates in, Brokeback Mountain is looking at an enormous opening weekend, considering it is only in five theatres. Yesterday, it grossed $192,000 for a screen average of $38,000 - in ONE DAY! Many great movies in limited release have an average like that over the entire wee...
