I was sort of hoping (sight unseen) that Pan's Labyrinth would make it, just so something of quality was involved, but apparently Hollywood is circling the wagons. Yep, as usual they should change the name of the award to "Most Visual Effects". I just saw Pan's Labyrinth last night and th...

I've seen two of these with live musical accompaniment, and I found the Scarlet Letter to be of underacknowledged masterpiece quality, and the Outlaw and His Wife well worth a view as well.

Hancock's one of the genuine greats, but his contribution to the Round Midnight soundtrack is something other than composition.

Though in my fantasy Oscar history he'd have already had an Oscar for composing the music Blow-Up.

Gotta be adapted. unless the Academy's changed its rules lately. Half the characters (Guy Noir, Dusty & Lefty, etc.) are based on characters from the radio show.

For several years this has been the honorary award highest on my wishlist. Terrific selection.

I think it's worth noting that the group also cited the Death of Mr. Lazarescu for a special award named for San Francisco critic and www.culturevulture.net founder Arthur Lazere, who passed away this September.

Here's a thought: Best Score? What to make of the year's potential nominees. Clint Eastwood could potentially grab two nominations, though Lord knows there's nothing worthwhile about his 'Flags' score. Javier Navarrete has picked up mention for 'Pan's Labyrinth', and last year's nominee Albert Iglé...

It seems ridiculous to me not to count the ballot of someone who was present at the meeting but stepped out of the room to go to the bedroom. If the awards were to have any integrity, the group would have gone back to the first ballot and added his three choices -- including Flushed Away -- and tak...

I do like The Queen -- it's an intelligent, literate, well-crafted film of the kind that's all too rare these days. But (other than for Helen Mirren) I am surprised it's doing so well with critics groups. I would have pegged it too middle-brow and stodgy in their eyes. What it does seem like to me ...

I'm not surprised; many if not all of them are based on pre-existing melodies, even if Keillor came up with new words for them.

As much as the sentiment of snubbing modern moviemakers in favor of a rerelease might have some appeal, I wish the potential beneficiary were a better film. Not that Army of Shadows is bad at all, just that it's nothing earthshattering. It wouldn't make my top ten list for 1969.

When I read the news this morning I felt a little hollowed out inside. I must admit I'm rarely truly saddened by the death of someone I've never met before, at least not if they've led a long and productive life. This is an exception. I love so many of his films, and feel grateful to have been in t...

I heard somewhere that the deal to obtain the rights to that song was a kind of devil's deal in itself: that a rate was negotiated that was affordable to the producers at the time but also precluded any non-festival release of the film in the United States. If the film is truly coming to netiflix t...
