Yes, yes, the nomination for Rob Schneider is beyond gross. But it's sort of hilarious. I know I would have gotten a big kick out of nominating him. Ziyi Zhang in Memoirs of a Geisha was about as sexy as a wooden board. But I think the nomination's uncomfortable racial aspect is what's really distu...

The notables: 4 of 6 Best Performance nominees were Oscar nominees. I actually think that lineup is surprisingly classy, with the other two performances quite strong within their genres. The best kiss nod for Heath and Jake is awesome. (But how could anyone pick Gyllenhaal for Best Performance over...

I thought The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation were two very good films, so I don't doubt Sofia Coppola's ability. However, I agree with Magilla that the trailer makes the film look awful. I still cannot understand how filmmakers, even good ones, don't realize that some actors simply cannot ...

My awards try to correct these inconsistencies as well as undo many of Oscar’s wrongs. By wrongs I don’t mean revisionist history. I mean denying awards to films and performances that were recognized in their own time, not films that have since been discovered to be overlooked masterpieces. To that...

Odd, I'd say the epic that will be remembered, or, rather, rediscovered, in the coming years will be The New World. NOT one of my favorite movies of the year, but, strangely, certain aspects have lingered with me the past few months. I suspect it may develop a cult following, if it hasn't already.....

I glanced over the nominations list again, and these fools can't even get the modern inspirational movies right. According to the AFI, Finding Neverland, Ray, The Passion of the Christ, Seabiscuit, Miracle, Remember the Titans, A Beautiful Mind, Antwone Fisher, I Am Sam, and The Rookie are all more...

Of course Casablanca will be on the list. The AFI worships that film. The only one of these things it wasn't on was the Greatest Laughs list, because I don't think they could have found ANY justification for that. It's in for sure. I love Dancer in the Dark, but when I think of inspiring films, thi...

I hate to veer things off topic even further, but I must admit that I've never really felt, at least in recent years, that the Academy had a bias against comedies. To be sure, there have been plenty of comedic films and performances I've loved that haven't made the lineup, but often the omission of...

Hollywood Z, I disagree with a lot of what you say, but still think you make a great point. I feel that Shakespeare in Love's victory over Saving Private Ryan was one of the smartest Oscar choices in recent years. (And the fact that The Thin Red Line, also superior to Ryan, was even nominated is pr...

What's most horrifying to me is that the list wasn't simply decided upon by committee, but VOTED upon by 12,000 members of the WGA, who were asked to submit a ballot listing their ten favorite screenplays. So Gump and Rocky and Princess Bride actually made individuals' top tens. I only wish someone...
