Re: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug reviews

It's getting some very good reviews thus far. Todd McCarhy, The Hollywood Reporter: Nearly everything about "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" represents an improvement over the first installment of Peter Jackson's three-part adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved creation. Beginning wi...

Re: Gravity reviews

You don't see Gravity winning cinematography, which is probably its biggest lock after visual effects and a win that probably even Italiano and Uri think is deserved? Damn! I knew I forgot something. That's six wins vs. six for 12 Years a Slave. Hmmm. Gravity: Original Screenplay; Cinematography; E...

Re: R.I.P. Rab C Nesbitt

For a moment there I thought Gregor Fisher had died. Sad new that McCall has passed away. I remember watching City Lights when I was a kid. A very funny, typical Glasgow comedy from the 80s. Rab C. Nesbitt will always be a classic.

Re: August: Osage County (2013)

I have no idea what this play and film is about, but after reading the Movie Freak review/reaction all I can think of is Home for Purim from For Your Consideration.

Re: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey reviews

Another positive review from the Guardian. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – review Peter Jackson brings brio and fun to Tolkien tale, but use of HFR technology and sheer length of opener may test non-believers. by Peter Bradshaw "Unexpected" is right, for a couple of reasons. Peter Jack...

Re: 2012 New York Film Critics Awards

I think it's a safe assumption that Lincoln will win Best Film. Director could quite easily go elsewhere, though it'll likely be Spielberg.

Re: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey reviews

We'll have the real reviews after the 5th when the embargo is lifted. From what I've read Sacks was sent to New Zealand not to review the film but blog or tweet about it. However the initial reaction is very positive.

Re: Preliminary Oscar Predictions

Okay, so I may be basing this on tweets from Tweeter, but I think a lot of people are underestimating the chances of The Hobbit. Also, I see Les Misérables becoming this years Dreamgirls.

Re: Independent Spirit Nominees

I'm pleased to see Matthew McConaughey nominated for Killer Joe. It may be my favorite film so far this year. I know he doesn't have a shot in hell, but I am nonetheless hoping he winds up surprising on Oscar nomination morning.

That's exactly what I think will happen. Although I do still hold out the tiniest hope that Malick will take Director.
