Happy-Go-Lucky, directed by Mike Leigh

Terrific comedy, despite a couple minor missteps in the second half. Hawkins' as good as advertised.

8/10

Pick One: Rescuing Anna Magnani, unfortunately at the expense of Susan Hayward. They're both remarkable, though. Pick Two: Rebel Without a Cause for Motion Picture Story Have I got this right? Irving Shulman and Nicholas Ray wrote the treatment, the screenplay being written by Stewart Stearn, so it...

Hmmm..... A chance to award my favourite director of all time for a film that probably wouldn't make my personal top ten? Lets find out. The Georges are out. No passes means no Roy Hill (though, to be fair, a dozen passes remaining would still mean no Roy Hill) and while American Graffiti is Lucas'...

Everything. MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW. MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW The scene that I keep coming back to when revisiting the film in my mind is one of the confrontations about the dead son, and Irwin utters "It was just an accident" twice. His line reading is so fragile you can just feel his heart bre...

Stuck 6/10 A queer one. It's far too funny to be taken as seriously as the bullshit score would suggest. In an unruly marriage of exploitation cinema, black comedy, and chamber drama, one might say that 'Stuck' gets stuck. But despite intermittent awkwardness of tone, dialogue, and execution, this ...

Thanks Damien. Moviewes mentioned he might vote for Bob Barr, and I know some people are considering Cynthia McKinney, and Nader's always there. Do all three have a national presence? It says that some of the candidates don't have ballot status (so presumably, not everyone can vote for them). Are t...

Hmmm.... Spencer Tracy's out. I like him, but I haven't seen San Francisco . No passes means no Paul Muni, though I quite like his performance and have no qualms with the win. Between Cooper, Huston and Powell? Well, I think it belongs to Huston - he's amazing in Dodsworth Flipp, tackle Best Origin...

Canada has just voted; the reactionary Harper and his Conservatives won, but it is still a minority government, thank God--which means they have to team up with another one of the three other sitting parties to get anything passed. Not much chance of getting any help from the Liberals, or the more-...
