Re: Academy Shortlists 2021

The Good: No TITANE for International Film!!!!! CANDYMAN and THE GREEN KNIGHT being recognized for their scores...even if neither will be nominated A quiet film like THE POWER OF THE DOG being recognized for it's sound has to be a sign of strong support across the Academy, even in categories you wou...

Re: LAFCA Winners

Since LAFCA was founded in 1975, only four films have won Best Film at all three of the major film critics groups: Goodfellas, L.A. Confidential, The Hurt Locker, and The Social Network. Those four films could be joined by a fifth: Drive My Car. Just for the "oh, these things are so predictabl...

Re: LAFCA Winners

This is turning out an even weirder Oscar season than last. Last year we had no box-office figures to go by. This year, we have them, but we don't know how to judge them (by normal standards, almost everything's a flop). They've taken away our measuring posts. I do not believe box-office is a very ...

Re: AFI Top Ten films

CMON CMON, THE GREEN KNIGHT, MASS and I am sure many others are far more deserving to be recognized over the vast majority of these films. Fucking embarrassing! :?

Re: NYFCC winners

BEST DIRECTOR: Jane Campion for "The Power of the Dog" Regardless of what won Best Film, THE POWER OF THE DOG did very well today which certainly makes up for the inexplicable NBR shut-out. I know some folks were (eagerly) writing it off as a serious Oscar contender, but the movie is very...

HOUSE OF GUCCI should be nominated for its make-up for Leto's transformation alone. Other than that, I think this is a single nom Ridley film like ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD.

Re: My first predictions of the year (pre-fall festivals)

My critic buddy saw Belfast and said he doesn't think it's winning Best Picture. He said it's not emotional enough. It's a bit more rambling than one would guess. He says these qualities of what it is not make it a bit more interesting than one would anticipate but at no point did he think it had t...

Re: My first predictions of the year (pre-fall festivals)

I read something about Mara's role being beefed up, essentially at the expense of Collette's character. In the book and the 1947 film version, Joan Blondell in the role Collette has in this one, was the most sympathetic character. Apparently many of her characteristics and lines have been transferr...

BEST ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE Toni Collette, Nightmare Alley Ariana DeBose, West Side Story Ann Dowd, Mass Kirsten Dunst, The Power of the Dog Marlee Matlin, CODA This may not change anyone's predictions, but just thought folks should know Searchlight is officially campaigning Blanchett as Supp...

First entry reviewed out of the gate: Titane , France (Julia Ducournau) 9.5/10 - A young girl gets into a car accident has a metal plate grafted onto her skull. She grows up into a dancer who has a....let's just say a thing for cars. Then it becomes really dark, disturbing, weird and totally fucked...

Re: The Gothams

No gender nominations  While I doubt the Oscars will ever adopt this in any of our lifetimes, I could definitely see critic groups doing this, particularly those with younger memberships. If so, it will be interesting to see if male performers are nominated at a higher rate than female perfor...

Re: List of submissions to the 94th Academy Awards for Best International Film

Titane is France's submission. Wow. Ugh! I have a high tolerance for the strange and even uncomfortable, but that movie was just vindictively unpleasant. The directing style was like Michael Bay meets David Cronenberg, leaving us with a movie that was loud, incoherent, and cruel. For once I...

Re: My first predictions of the year (pre-fall festivals)

I do not buy into the idea Academy members pick winners based on who is overdue -- just look at Peter O'Toole and Glenn Close. However, I think Sabin is correct that Branagh is a well-liked actor and director, which could help him in a tight race. Sure, there are a few examples of folks who have be...

Re: My first predictions of the year (pre-fall festivals)

dankfrank wrote Good point. Belfast thus far has strong but not universally rave reviews. If—big if—Licorice Pizza gets similar or stronger reviews, which of these two filmmakers do voters see as more due for an Oscar? For me if would be PTA by a long stretch. The box office factor seems less relev...
