Rod Lurie -- always a must to avoid.

Did you find The Contender to be unbearably smug and self-righteous as well, Damien?

The Contender has one of my favorite lines, something two of my friends and I quote on almost a weekly basis: "It just doesn't make any sense....JACK." There's just something about the way she says it that never ceases to crack me up.

I caught a bit of it the other day and, while I still think that Joan Allen's spot in that line-up should've gone to Gillian Anderson or Bjork, there is a nobility and grace to her character that is very admirable. That said, the movie is a bit much at times. Love the version of Cash's "Ring of Fire" playing in the beginning, though.

With a Southern accent...
"Don't you dare lie to me!" and...
"You threaten my congeniality, you threaten me!"

-------

"You shouldn't be doing what you're doing. The truth is enough!"
"Are you and Perry?" ... "Please, Nelle."

And no wonder it got nominations -- Rod Lurie, back in his TV reviewing days, was the one who founded the Broadcast "Critics" Awards.

I love that scene where Vera Farmiga calls Kate Beckinsale "an unpatriotic little cunt". That's one of the main reasons I want to see it.

I have no idea what this movie is. I don't think I've ever heard of it.

I've had Frost/Nixon among my predictions for a Best Picture nomination since the beginning of the month, before any of the precursors. I put it there largely because it's a political film that doesn't feel too political. It's like Good Night, and Good Luck in that respect. And with the victory of A Beautiful Mind, we should never count Ron Howard out of any race even if he did do The Da Vinci Code. When he goes serious, he seems to attract a lot of attention.

Haha, this thought flitted through my mind as well (not verbatim). I mean, I seem to remember their show last year and how the amassed critics on stage, while presenting best picture, pointed toward their reputation for accurately guessing Oscar's whims as some sort of accomplishment.
