Jane Wyman in Johnny Belinda(1948) was a deaf-mute, I seem to remember, but she was not supporting.

Only three actresses have received Best Supporting Actress nominations for non-speaking roles: Patty Duke won the award for The Miracle Worker in 1962, Samantha Morton was nominated for Sweet and Lowdown in 1999, and Rinko Kikuchi was nominated for Babel in 2006. Both Morton and Kikuchi performed their roles without speaking a word, while Duke had no dialogue whatsoever other than grunts and screams.

Isn't this not entirely accurate? If I recall correctly, The Miracle Worker ends with Helen Keller uttering her first word: "water". ???
She sure does: get your hankies out.

I don't think Holly Hunter said a word throughout "The Piano" (unless you count the voice-over, which isn't her....or is it?), and she won the Oscar.

edit: my bad, just saw this was Supporting Actress, in which case I couldn't comment.
