This is very different from the Schiavo case. Terry Schiavo's husband, who was living with another woman (conflict of interest) wanted to remove life-support against the parent's wishes. You all remember who I sided with at the time.

But in this case, the father believes the time has come for nature to play this tragedy out. That the goverment isn't respecting his wishes and using this tragedy as an opportunity for grandstanding is appalling.

This is not a euthanasia issue, the woman has been for all intents and purposes dead since her accident. Neither the Prime Minister nor the Church should be involved in this. Nice to know Italy is no better than the U.S. when it comes to these things. It's Terry Shiavo all over again.

What does "she can still have babies" mean? Is the P.M. advocating rape? This is ludicrous in the extreme.

So now life and death is decided upon your reproductive organs? Does that mean men can never choose to off themselves?

Apparently, Berlusconi overruled the Supreme Court of Italy in a "Right to Die" case. He did so in consultation with the Vatican. One of his stated reasons - "she can still have babies."

I didn't realize how strong the influence of the Church was in Italy, to be honest.
